VIDALIA — A man who allegedly scammed dozens of local residents in the name of his cancer-stricken son is behind bars.

Michael W. Jones, 42, of Liberty, was arrested Wednesday on charges of felony theft by fraud.

Jones reportedly sold box lunches in the area in June, saying he was using the money for his son’s care.

But the lunches never came.

The Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office also expects to arrest a woman currently being held by Natchez Police in connection with the same fundraiser scam.

The woman, Jillinda Leggett, 41, of Gloster, is expected to be extradited to Concordia Parish.

Natchez Police Department Investigator Joe Belling is working the case with CPSO Investigator Phillip Webber.

The two allegedly sold tickets for the fundraiser and then never delivered lunches to the willing donors.

They sold to individuals and businesses around Concordia St. Francisville, Natchez and Kentwood, La.

Some individuals even made monetary donations to the “cause” without ordering a lunch.

According to Webber, Jones does reportedly have a sick son, but the money raised from selling the nonexistent lunches was allegedly used to purchase narcotics for Jones.

More than $500 was donated by residents of Concordia Parish alone. Jones is currently being held at the Concordia Parish Correctional Facility on a $10,000 bond.
