VIDALIA — More than 200 people from the Miss-Lou are expected to participate in the Out of the Darkness Community Walk on Saturday.
The fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention by helping support local and national suicide prevention and awareness programs.
The Miss-Lou Out of the Darkness Walk is one of nearly 220 Out of the Darkness Community Walks nationwide from September through December. The walks are expected to unite more than 60,000 walkers nationally and raise nearly $4 million for suicide prevention efforts.
“Suicide is a national health problem, but in addition, suicide is plagued by silence and stigma that continue to be barriers for seeking help,” local organizer Erin Sessions Frith said. “This walk will help bring suicide out of the darkness, and so far we have raised over $3,600 which will be used to fund research and local prevention programs.”
The Miss-Lou community walk will begin with registration and check-in at the Vidalia Amphitheater at 9 a.m. Speakers and entertainment will begin at 10 a.m. with the walk to follow immediately after along the Vidalia Riverfront.
Speakers will include the Rev. Bo Swilley from Community Chapel Church of God.
Entertainment will include the Highland Highlighters, a youth drama team, and others.
In the event of rain, organizers hope to have the entertainment and speakers moved inside, but the walk will occur rain or shine.
