WESSON — Two interceptions returned for touchdowns lifted the No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs to a 31-17 win over the No. 7 Co-Lin Wolfpack in the MACJC State Championship game Saturday night.

Co-Lin quarterback Percy Turner, who threw only six interceptions all season, was picked off three times by the Bulldog defense.

Two of the three proved costly as Gulf Coast’s Don Jones raced 57 yards for a touchdown making it 17-10 with 10:20 left in the third quarter. Four minutes later, Lamar Johnson took a Turner pass and went 37 yards for a TD making it 24-10 Bulldogs.

The Wolfpack cut the lead to 24-17 with 14:26 left in the fourth quarter as Turner scrambled down to the 1-yard line.

Montrell Conner took the ball into the end zone, scoring his second touchdown of the game. But the Bulldogs had other ideas. With 7 minutes remaining in the game, the Bulldogs faked a punt on fourth down as Rueben Corley took the ball for a 27-yard run.

That drive ended with a one-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Clayton Moore making it 31-17.

Co-Lin (9-2) took an 7-0 in the first quarter on a 70-yard 7 play drive with Montrell Conner plunging 1-yard for the touchdown.

Gulf Coast answered with 10 points, a 33-yard field goal by Will Scott and a 1-yard touchdown run by James Gillum. The touchdown was set up by one of two Co-Lin fumbles. Gillum finished the game 131 yards on 27 carries.

The Wolfpack tied the game at 10-all on a Justin Danise 40-yard field goal just before halftime.

Turner finished the game 14-of-25 for 121 yards. Conner led the Wolfpack rushers with 13 carries for 56 yards. Joel Davis had 11 rushes for 46 yards. Freshman LaVoyd James had 7 catches for 53 yards to lead Co-Lin receivers.

Co-Lin was looking to avenge its only loss of the season, a 23-3 loss at Gulf Coast on Oct. 16. The Wolfpack, who were looking for their first state championship since 1985, defeated last year’s state champion East Mississippi Lions 41-28 in last week’s semifinals.

Gulf Coast will host the third annual Mississippi Bowl on Dec. 5.
