MONTEREY — Georgetown head coach M.C. Keathley had the right game plan for Monterey — use a zone defense to keep the ball from going inside to post player Josh Chapman and force his teammates to take jump shots.

However, there were two things that went against them — Monterey also played some good defense and the Wolves did an excellent job on the boards.

Monterey eventually pulled away thanks to a 17-5 advantage in the fourth quarter as the Wolves defeated Georgetown 56-34 Thursday night to remain undefeated this season.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well, and missed a lot of open shots. They played a tight zone. Georgetown did a good job of defending us and taking away our big kid,” Monterey head coach Eric Richard said. “Credit to our kids for guarding and rebounding until we could get it going a little bit.”

After taking a 13-9 lead after one quarter of play, it looked like the Wolves were on their way to a blowout win after outscoring the Bulldogs 18-9 in the second quarter and taking a 31-18 lead into halftime.

“The shots we normally make we didn’t make tonight. They did a good job defending our strengths,” Richard said.

But Georgetown’s zone defense was key in keeping the Bulldogs in the game as they outscored Monterey 11-8 in the third quarter. However, Monterey’s defense put the pressure on Georgetown in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Wolves some easy fast-break baskets.

While Chapman was held to 10 points, Shawn McClenahan and Nick Blake picked up the slack for the Wolves. McClenahan led the way with a game-high 13 points and Blake finished with 12 points.

Monterey (7-0) plays at LaSalle on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Amite School Center 37, WCCA 34

CLINTON, La. — Kyle Wilkerson and Jacob Dooley each scored 11 points for Wilkinson County Christian Academy, but it was not enough as the Rams lost to Amite School Center Thursday afternoon and were eliminated from the Silliman Shootout.

“The kids played hard tonight. Coming off an embarrassing loss to Central Private (Tuesday night), I thought our kids bounced back and played with a sense of purpose,” Rams head coach Billy Caston said. “Amite played hard as well. It came down to a few shots. They made the shots and we didn’t. When it came down to it, we couldn’t put it in the bucket.”

Two things Caston pointed out that he was pleased with from his team were defense and rebounding. However, he wasn’t all that thrilled with the number of missed free throws that proved to be costly. WCCA (1-5) was just 7 of 23 from the line.

“Half of them were front-end one-and-ones,” Caston said.

Wilkerson scored all of his points in the first half. Austin Goodfellow chipped in with nine pints for the Rams.

Despite the loss, Caston said he’s pleased with the progress the players have made.

“We’re getting better. I’m proud of the kids,” he said.
