Maxine Brown Hawkins

FERRIDAY — Services for Maxine Brown Hawkins, 92, of Ferriday, who died on Nov. 27, 2010, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday with Bro. Ray Varnado officiating.

Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Natchez under the direction of the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday.

Hawkins was born on July 7, 1918, in Jackson Parish, La., the daughter of Andrew and Dora Brown.

Ms. Maxine Hawkins graduated from Bossier City High School in 1934. She was a registered nurse, studying under the sisters at Saint Francis Sanitarium in Monroe, La., and received her registered nurse degree in 1937. While working as a nurse in Columbia, La., she met and married James M. Hawkins Jr. on July 4, 1940. They moved to Ferriday in 1949. When Concordia Parish Hospital opened in Ferriday she worked there for the next 12 years and retired. She loved nursing. She was a much-admired nurse by all who knew and worked with her and by her family who loved her. She was a Methodist and attended Sevier Methodist Church in Ferriday.

Hawkins was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her son, Dan E. Hawkins; two sisters; four brothers; and her great-granddaughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Dryg.

Survivors include one son, Jimmy Hawkins and wife Mary Ann, of Ferriday; one daughter, Jan H. Wishum and husband Frank, of Ferriday; four grandchildren, Eric T. Dryg, John Hawkins, Jessica W. Williamson and Jason Hawkins; and six great-grandchildren, Greg Hawkins, Jordan Williamson, Braylee Dryg, Aislyn Dryg, Liam Williamson, Ian Dryg and Malloy Hawkins.

Pallbearers will be Eric Dryg, John Hawkins, Jason Hawkins, Greg Hawkins, Jerry Poole and Dane Paul.
