CENTREVILLE — Trinity Episcopal went into Tuesday night’s game at Centreville Academy without Givonni Dent and Kent King, who were getting ready for Friday afternoon’s All-Star Game.

But even without the two seniors in the lineup, the Saints had little trouble defeating the Tigers 78-46 for its first win of the season thanks to four players scoring in double figures as well as a dominating first quarter on both ends of the court.

Tip McKenzie led the third-ranked team in Class A with a game-high 14 points. L.J. Trimble added 12 points while Tanner Cage and Sky Logan chipped in with 10 points each.

Trinity Episcopal (1-1) forced several turnovers and contested nearly every shot Centreville took in the first quarter, which ended with the Saints having a commanding 25-5 lead. The Tigers’ offense came alive after that, but their defense could not slow down the Saints.

Corey Gaulden scored 11 points and Jake Darden had nine points to lead Centreville.

ACCS 53, Prairie View 50

NATCHEZ — Curtis Blakely scored nearly half of Prairie View’s points by himself. That turned out not to be a good thing as the Adams County Christian School Rebels held off the Spartans Tuesday night.

While Blakely led all scorers with 24 points, only one other player for Prairie View scored in double figures — Tyler Jones with 14 points. By contrast, ACCS (4-3) had a much more balanced scoring attack. James Moffett led the Rebels with 16 points while Daniel Guedon and Theo King had nine points apiece.

Neither team could get into an offensive rhythm in the first half. By halftime, the Spartans led the Rebels 20-18. ACCS then outscored Prairie View 18-16 in the third quarter to make it a tie ball game at 36-36 and won the game by outscoring the Spartans 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

Monterey 38, LaSalle 31

OLLA, La. — Perhaps one of the most pleasant surprises in boys’ high school basketball in this area is the Monterey Wolves. On Tuesday night, they needed a second-half rally to defeat the LaSalle Tigers to remain undefeated.

LaSalle controlled the game in the first quarter on its way to a 12-6 lead. Even though Monterey outscored the Tigers 12-10 in the second quarter, the Wolves still trailed by four points at halftime.

But in the third quarter, LaSalle’s shots were not falling and that’s when the comeback really started. The Wolves outscored the Tigers 7-2 in that quarter and then capped off the win with a 13-7 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Dillon Smith led Monterey (8-0) with 11 points and Cole Fancher added 10 points. Johnson led LaSalle with 11 points.

Cathedral 60, MSD 31

JACKSON — Collin Hammons finished with 16 points to lead the Cathedral Green Wave, which had all 15 players end up in the scoring column in its win over the Mississippi School for the Deaf Bulldogs in the Region 7-1A opener Tuesday night.

In addition to winning its region opener, Cathedral finally picked up its first win of the season. And the first quarter turned out to be the big difference as the Green Wave opened up a 31-4 lead and cruised from there.

D.J. Perry scored seven points and Daniel Huffines added six points for Cathedral (1-3, 1-0). Cameron Lane led MSD with eight points.

Rayville 62, Ferriday 45

FERRIDAY — After staying toe for toe with Rayville in the first half, Ferriday couldn’t find the ocean in the third quarter and Rayville took advantage as the Hornets defeated the Trojans by 17 points Tuesday night.

After one quarter of play, the game was tied at 12-12. At halftime it was 30-30. But in the decisive third quarter, Ferriday scored just five points while Rayville put up 14 points. And in the fourth quarter, the Hornets put the game away with an 18-10 advantage.

J. Murphy and T. Briggs scored 15 points apiece to lead Rayville. Ted’Rai Gullage had a game-high 20 points to lead Ferriday (0-4), which will take on Madison Parish Thursday at the Tensas High Tournament.

McComb 52, Natchez High 33

MCCOMB — Ladarrius White had a game-high 19 points and Trevosity Ellvey chipped in with 12 points as the McComb Tigers defeated the struggling Natchez High Bulldogs Tuesday night.

What was interesting about the game was that not one player for Natchez High scored in double figures. The Bulldogs were led by Rashaun Bates with eight points and Jonathan Griffin with six points.

McComb led Natchez High 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and 24-14 at halftime. The Bulldogs (1-4) play at Wingfield at 7:30 p.m. in their Division 6-5A opener.
