JACKSON — Through three quarters, the undefeated Natchez High Lady Bulldogs were on upset alert.

Wingfield’s Pershawn Williams almost single-handily carried the Lady Falcons on her back. But in the fourth quarter, Natchez High put the clamps on Williams and forced her teammates to make shots.

It was that defensive effort that enabled the Lady Bulldogs to rally for a 48-44 win over Wingfield Friday night in their Division 6-6A opener.

The Lady Bulldogs’ trio of Keyana Miller, Ashley Minor and Rebecca Minor did enough to overcome Williams’ game-high 26 points. Miller finished with 17 points while Ashley Minor scored 15 points and Rebecca Minor added seven points.

Despite coming into this game with a 4-4 record, Wingfield was not the least bit intimidated by Natchez High. The Lady Falcons took a 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and then held the Lady Bulldogs to eight points in the second quarter en route to a 24-20 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs (7-0, 1-0) finally found their offensive rhythm in the second half and that was another contributing factor in their come-from-behind win. They cut the Lady Falcons’ lead at the break in half with a 15-13 advantage in the third quarter. And then in the fourth quarter, they held Wingfield (4-5, 0-1) to just seven points and scored 13 points themselves.

Natchez High hosts Jefferson County at 6 p.m. today.

Tensas High 52, Ferriday 51

ST. JOSEPH, La. — After a tough loss to Class 3A runner-up Madison Parish on Thursday night, Ferriday had a chance to stay alive against Tensas High Friday night at the Tensas High Tournament.

Instead, the host Lady Panthers used a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Lady Trojans. And in the process, Ferriday has gone 0-5 in the two tournaments it has played in so far this season.

Ferriday went into halftime trailing Tensas High 24-23. However, the Lady Trojans responded with their defense playing a pivotal role. They outscored the Lady Panthers 13-8 to take a 36-32 lead at the end of the third quarter.

But the Lady Panthers got the ball to their two main scorers, M. Robinson and C. South, in the fourth quarter, and that helped enable them to outscore the Lady Trojans 20-15 for the dramatic comeback victory.

Robinson and South each finished with 16 points to lead Tensas High.

Ferriday (2-5) was led by Keatrice Brown with 14 points, T’Keyah Fletcher with 13 points and Chante Poole with 10 points. The Lady Trojans play at Block at 6 p.m. next Tuesday
