NATCHEZ — Services for Dorothy L. “Dot “ Barnes, 65, of Calumet Park, Ill., formerly of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, in Calumet Park, were Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Covenant United Church of Christ in South Holland, Ill.

Burial was Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home in Bude.

Dorothy was a 1963 graduate of Sadie V. Thompson High School. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Alcorn State University, in Lorman, and a master of education degree from National College of Education (National Lewis University) in Evanston, Ill., in 1981.

Dorothy’s career in education began in Pass Christian in 1967 and continued in the Chicago public school system for the next 35 years. She taught at McCorkle, Brentano and Gompers elementary schools. Dorothy was known as an excellent teacher with strong classroom management and organizational skills. She often served as mentor to new teachers. She retired from teaching at Gompers Elementary in 2003.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Bobby J. Barnes; one son, Tomarcus Barnes and wife, Mishka, of Atlanta; her mother, Sophronia Dyson of Natchez; four aunts, Sarah Lucas, Helen Gooden, Flora Gooden and Lottie Beckem, all of Natchez; one uncle, John Gooden and wife, Marie, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Phyllis Harris and Karen Gibson, both of Missouri City, Texas; one brother, Joseph Dyson and wife, Joycelyn, of Aurora, Ill.; one stepbrother, Nelson Dyson Jr. and wife, Alice, of Natchez; three nieces, Danielle Roundtree, Dion Dyson and April Dyson; four nephews, Kendrick Gibson, Keondre Gibson, Neville Dyson and Norville Dyson; two great-nephews, Alphonso and James; one great-niece, Aniyah; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Robinson of Chicago and Lonnie Jean Jones of Natchez; and a number of other relatives and loyal friends.
