ACCS gets messy win

NATCHEZ — Even though the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels defeated Central Private School Lady Rebels 62-34 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 5-AA game, head coach Melanie Hall wasn’t exactly pleased with some aspects of the game.

“I thought at times we did some good things and at times we did some things that we can do better,” Hall said. “It was a district ‘W’, but it wasn’t a pretty win.”

ACCS shut out Central Private in the first quarter en route to an 11-0 lead and the host Lady Rebels never looked back. They even put up 24 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 51-21 lead.

Despite having such a big lead, Hall said her team could have played better defense for the entire ball game. The one Central Private player ACCS had trouble defending was Jessie Creel, who finished with a game-high 22 points.

“Our defensive intensity at times was good and at times was not. It wasn’t one of our prettiest games,” Hall said. “Everybody got a chance to contribute. That was a positive. I believe in my kids. We just have to keep working and take every opportunity to get better.”

Brandis White lead ACCS (15-3, 5-0) with 17 points and Caitlan Melton had 10 points. The Lady Rebels play at Silliman Friday in an important district game for both teams.

Sterlington 67, Ferriday 40

MONROE, La. — Ferriday had to go to its bench much sooner than head coach Lisa Abron wanted to due to foul trouble and Sterlington took advantage of that on its way to a 27-point win Tuesday night in the District 2-2A opener for both teams.

“We got in foul trouble early. In the first quarter, I had one of my starters with three quick fouls,” Abron said. Just dug ourselves in a big hole and never recovered.”

Well, it could have been bigger for the Lady Trojans in the first half than it actually turned out to be. The Lady Panthers only led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter before holding the Lady Trojans to six points in the second quarter.

It was the second half when Sterlington (21-1, 1-0) really took over the ball game. Led by Simone Williams, Alayah Mitchelll and Lakelia Pounds, the Lady Panthers scored 42 of their 67 points after halftime. Williams led all scorers with 31 points while Mitchell scored 17 points and Pounds added 13 points.

Ferriday, on the other hand, had three players score in double figures. Chante Poole had 18 points while T’Keyah Fletcher and Keatrice Brown each scored 11 points. Which is not bad except for one thing – those were the only three Lady Trojans players who ended up in the scoring column.

“That’s not the way to start district, but I remain optimistic,” Abron said.

Ferriday (7-11, 0-1) plays host to Lake Providence on Friday.

Lanier 63, Natchez High 32

NATCHEZ — Tuesday night’s game between the Lanier Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the Clarion-Ledger’s Girls’ Super 10 Poll and No. 1 in Class 5A, and the Natchez High Lady Bulldogs, the No. 5 team in Class 6A, turned out to be a mismatch.

Kierra Jordan led four Lanier players in double figures with a game-high 22 points and Dorcas Loggins finished with 13 points as the visiting Lady Bulldogs had no trouble taking care of the host Lady Bulldogs by 31 points.

Lanier had its way with a good Natchez High team on both ends of the court in the first quarter, which ended with the visitors taking a 23-9 lead. The only quarter in which Natchez High scored in double digits was the second quarter with 10 points.

Dominique Brothern and Cortney Epting each chipped in with 11 points for Lanier (15-0).

Rebecca Minor scored 13 points and Keyana Miller added 11 points for Natchez High (13-4), which hosts Wingfield Friday.

Wilkinson County 71, Hazlehurst 36

WOODVILLE — It is hard to believe Wilkinson County started the 2010-2011 season 0-10. Since then, the Lady Wildcats have won seven of their last nine games, including Tuesday night’s 35-point win over the Hazlehurst Lady Indians in Region 7-3A action.

Lineasi Palmer led Wilkinson County (7-12, 3-2) with a game-high 20 points. Tyesha Harris followed with 19 points and Breshianna Day chipped in with 15 points.

The Lady Wildcats dominated a young and inexperienced Hazlehurst team in the first quarter. The Lady Indians managed to score just three points and trailed 19-3 at the end of the quarter. Hazlehurst senior Octavia Anderson was held to a mere five points while Jenny Joiner led the Lady Indians with 10 points.

As to what the key was to Wilkinson County’s win, head coach Trimeka Gaines said, “Hustle and defense. And teamwork as a whole. We used a 3-2 (zone) and a 1-2-2,” Gaines said.

Monterey 45, Avoyelles Charter 41

MONTEREY, La. — Ellen Bairnsfather finished with a game-high 22 points and Monterey’s defense came through in the third quarter as the Lady Wolves rallied to defeat Avoyelles Charter in their District 6-B opener Tuesday night.

The first half didn’t go exactly as Monterey head coach Cary Shivley was hoping for. The Lady Wolves struggled from the field and by halftime wound up trailing 24-15. Yet in the third quarter, Monterey put the clamps on the Lady Vikings and that allowed them to not only get back in the game, but take the lead as well.

Monterey outscored Avoyelles Charter 18-2 to take a 33-26 lead. Even though the Lady Vikings got shots to fall in the fourth quarter and outscored the Lady Wolves 15-12, it was not quite enough to get over the hump.

Kendall Lipsey added nine points and Kaley Baker chipped in with eight points for Monterey (18-1, 1-0), which hosts Harrisonburg Friday. Avoyelles Charter was led by Lyric Perry with 18 points and Summer Brooks with 13 points.
