NATCHEZ — Author Greg Iles underwent surgery at University of Mississippi Medical Center Tuesday after suffering severe injuries in a car accident Monday night.

The other victim of the accident, Elizabeth Moore, 19, was also being treated at UMC Tuesday for injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to a Highway Patrol press release.

The 2007 Audi Iles was driving appeared to have entered traffic in the northbound lane of traffic when it was struck in the left side by the front of Moore’s northbound 2001 Ford pick-up truck, the release says.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Moore suffered two fractures in ankle, a fracture in knee cap, a puncture and collapsed lung, two bruised ribs and burns on chest from seat belt, she said.

Moore’s mother, Amanda Freeman, said Tuesday evening a tube was placed in Elizabeth’s throat to treat her lung, but that she was doing better Tuesday.

Moore said on the telephone she is still hurting but appreciates all of the prayers for her recovery.

Iles reportedly underwent a procedure on his aorta, was treated for a broken femur and had surgery on his lower leg area.

Iles’s family could not be reached for comment on his latest condition. Iles’s friend, Courtney Aldridge, said Iles’s family has been flooded with calls and appreciates the support, and that friends, family and community members are welcome to check updates on his condition on Iles’s Facebook page.
