Family enjoys time outdoors

ERIC J. SHELTON/THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Reed White, 12, helps his dad, Reagan White, clean a friend’s all-terrain vehicle Thursday afternoon on Summerfileld Place in Natchez. The father and son both enjoy hunting and other sports.

NATCHEZ — When The Dart landed on Summerfield Place, Reagan White and his son, Reed, were prepping for the weekend hunting trip.

The father and son were washing down a Bad Boy Buggy in anticipation for a weekend turkey-hunting trip with a friend from Baton Rouge.

“Our friend, Steve Burtner, leaves it here so he doesn’t have to haul it back and forth,” Reagan said Thursday afternoon. “We’re just trying to beat the rain.”

For Reed, a seventh grader at Cathedral School, hunting is one of his two loves, the other being baseball. Since Reed is involved with Cathedral Middle School baseball, the Miss-Lou Braves tournament team and Natchez Dixie Youth, his love for the game is evident.

Baseball tops the list of team sports for the duo. Reed plays for the Cathedral Middle School baseball team.

“Playing the field is probably my favorite part,” Reed said. “My position is second base, which I’ve been playing for forever, but I can play pretty much every position except catcher.”

Reed said watching his older brother Dylan White play was an inspiration to him. Dylan pitched for the Green Wave last season and is currently a freshman at LSU majoring in sports administration management.

“It was fun watching him,” Reed said. “He taught me how to pitch some, and he threw to me in the cage some and taught me how to hit.”

Reed said he might like to both pitch and play the field when he gets to the high school level.

“My brother did both,” Reed said.

Reagan said his daughter Taylor, 17, is also involved with Cathedral athletics.

“She does soccer, cross county and is the bat girl for the baseball team. It all comes back to baseball somewhere,” Reagan joked.

Even though the duo is currently trying to take a turkey, Reagan said deer season is his son’s favorite hunting season.

“He had a good year this past year,” Reagan said. “He took three bucks, including a 7-point and 5-point and a doe. Turkey season’s been slow so far. It’s been a weird year.”

If the family had to choose between hunting and baseball, Reagan said he wouldn’t know which one to pick.

“That’s a hard choice,” he said. “I guess it’s good that the two fall during different seasons. Hunting is good because you go be with your friends where it’s quiet, and baseball’s good because you can be with friends in a good atmosphere.”

Reagan said he’s a third-generation hunter in his family, and has been president of Cathedral’s athletic association for two years now.

“We try to be pretty active in all sports and support everything,” Reagan said.

“Our biggest accomplishment recently was our new softball field. Having something on campus is definitely the biggest advantage. I don’t think we’ll ever have a baseball field on campus because we don’t have the space, but we’ll hopefully have our own field eventually.”

With two of his children still at Cathedral, Reagan said he misses watching his oldest son play.

“Being in Baton Rouge, it’s not far for me to go down and eat lunch or spend the weekend,” Reagan said. “It’s nice seeing the kids succeed.”

Reed said being the youngest son isn’t really something that concerns him.

“It doesn’t matter to me. I’m fine with it,” he said.

And Reagan said he treasures getting to hunt with his children or watch them be involved with athletics.

“You want them to know you gave them support at as many school or sporting events you could possibly be at,” Reagan said.

Reed said he just enjoys getting hunting tips from his dad.

“It’s fun sitting there and learning more things every time we hunt,” Reed said. “He always sees (the game) before me and hears them before me.”
