County armed with grant dollars

NATCHEZ — An area of Adams County that is highly populated and suffering from drainage issues will be the recipient of grant funds to solve the problem.

The Adams County Board of Supervisors just has to decide which area needs it the most.

“We need to narrow it down to two or three areas to get an estimate,” County Road Manager Curly Jones said at the Monday meeting.

Areas the board will assess to receive the improvements are the Pineview subdivision, Grafton Circle and Kingston Road near the volunteer fire station.

The grant funds only go to four or five counties affected by Hurricane Gustav, board president Darryl V. Grennell said.

“The money is coming from a special pot of money we call Gustav funds,” Grennell said.

The motion to allow Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District planner Allen Laird to submit a grant application to fix the drainage issues on behalf of Adams County was passed.

Because Thomas “Boo” Campbell and S.E. “Spanky” Felter were absent, the board recessed the meeting to be continued at a later date. The meeting has not yet been rescheduled. Grennell said the board will deliberate on interviews for the county administrator position at the meeting.

In other business:

4Stan Owens, director of Adams County Emergency Management, said he is revising an updated emergency plan in case of an accident at the nuclear plant.

“I need the board to promulgate official guidance,” Owens said.

4Adams County Extension Agent David Carter said with one more herbicide-spraying and mowing, rehabilitated watersheds will be up-to-date for the foreseeable future.

Grennell said the watersheds are designed to protect (mostly southern) areas of Adams County from flooding in strong storms.

“They are a protective mechanism,” Grennell said. “Growths in the watershed compromise its integrity.”

The board agreed a private contractor must carry out the work because clearing the area is dangerous. Carter said it will cost $3,500 to spray the area and $3,600 to mow. Grennell said after the final herbicide application, the watersheds will just need occasional clipping going forward.

4The board voted to allow the Adams County Sheriff’s Department to purchase new software for jail and office operations.

4Requests by developers to change the name of a new subdivision and two streets off Greenfield Road were approved by the board. What was Stacy Estates is being changed to Woodland Hills. Chelsea Lane will become Tara Drive, and Mackenzie Street will be Molly Lea Street. No one currently lives at Woodland Hills.

4Lillie DeShields, a resident on Beau Pré Road, circulated an official petition to have speed humps installed on her street to slow speeders. Several of the individuals who signed the petition requested to have their names removed after signing. Specific qualifications to sign the petition were ordered at the meeting, saying the signer has to be 18 or older, be given the options agree or disagree with installation of speed humps and enforce only one signature per household.

4John Hilbert, new general manager of Cable One, Natchez, introduced himself to the board.

He said Cable One is willing to address issues with local service, including troubleshooting problems with local meeting broadcasts.
