NATCHEZ — Cathedral School pitcher Tyler Morrison combines good numbers on the mound with a solid performance in the classroom.
Morrison is making all A’s this year in classes like calculus and anatomy, some of the toughest Cathedral has to offer, he said.
On the diamond he is one of the top pitchers for the Green Wave, who has won the district championship each year since Morrison’s freshman year.
“I guess you would call me the ace,” Morrison said. “I feel I’m doing pretty well this year but there is always room for improvement.”
Some of Morrison’s academic success can be credited to good genes.
Morrison’s father was valedictorian at Cherokee County High School in Centre, Ala., Morrison said. His oldest brother, Ryan is currently a dentist and was valedictorian at Cathedral. And his middle brother Jesse is a dean’s list student, majoring in chemical engineering and biology at the University of Alabama.
Morrison’s father Tim hopes that Tyler can follow in his brothers’ footsteps, he said.
“I hope he does as good as his two brothers,” Tim Morrison said.
Another aspect of Morrison’s success on the diamond and in the classroom can be attributed to his resiliency, his father said.
“When things get really bad he keeps right on doing what he’s supposed to do,” Tim Morrison said.
Tyler exemplified his resiliency in Cathedral’s win Monday night against Franklin County, his father said.
The score was 2-2 and Franklin County popped up a Morrison pitch and the Cathedral infield misjudged the ball and let it drop. One run came in to put Franklin County ahead, but Morrison shut them out the rest of the game, Tim Morrison said.
“A lot of pitchers would get their head down and get upset, but he didn’t,” Tim Morrison said. “For some reason he’s always had that knack.”
Morrison also had a huge highlight in last year’s postseason.
Morrison hurled a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Ethel in round one of the playoffs.
“It’s unusual for a no-hitter to be pitched in the playoffs,” Tim Morrison said.
Morrison will be heading to the University of Alabama next fall, like both of his parents and his brother Jesse. He plans on majoring in chemistry, he said.
“We are an Alabama family,” Morrison’s mother Blanche said. “(Tyler) is the only one in his class going to Alabama.”
Morrison got the opportunity to play baseball with his older brother Jesse his freshman year at Cathedral, and next fall he will get the opportunity to be his college roommate, his mother said.
Morrison has always been good at math and science. He even got the opportunity to participate in Science Quest at Copiah-Lincoln Wesson. Morrison competed in chemistry and physics.
“The teachers at Cathedral have been very good as far as the math,” Tim Morrison said. “And the coaches are right there (teaching some of those subjects), and that means a lot to him. He has authority figures teaching (his math) and science classes.”
Morrison said he looks forward to finishing out the playoffs, his graduation and, even more so, his future he said.
“Oh yeah (I’m looking forward to graduation), but I’m more looking forward to Alabama,” Morrison said.
