Join NASD in fight against obesity

Mississippi ranks No. 1 in the nation for childhood and adult obesity, a distinction that the Natchez-Adams School District would like to remove from not only Mississippi but Adams County in particular.

That is why the NASD’s nursing department, parent liaisons, physical educators, coaching staff, administration and the school board have joined forces in an interactive and educational night for parents, students, and teachers in our district.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday the NASD will be hosting a “Family Fun and Fitness Night” at the Steckler Multipurpose Center and the campus of Natchez High School.

There will be instructions and interactions on exercise, healthy food choices for snacks and meals on the go, blood pressure checks, BMI calculations and dietary literature available to all.

We will have exercise stations set up throughout the campuses that are free, fun and will involve all members of the family.

Our goal is to promote healthy and safe exercises that families can do in their own homes and yards without the expense of a gym membership, or the unavailable travel time that so many of us live without.

Hop scotch, hula hoop, basketball and video aerobics are just a few of the activities that we have planned for you and your family.

There will be healthy food and snack options as prizes and rewards for participation in the events. These items have been chosen to show parents and students inexpensive, nutritious and delicious snacks for all, in addition to the fact that they are quick and easy for when you are on the go!

The NASD nurses will be providing blood pressure checks, weights and BMI calculations as well.

This Family Fun and Fitness Night will take place at the Steckler building for grades kindergarten through fourth grade, and on the campus of Natchez High School for grades fifth through 12th.

Activities will be held in the gym, on the track, in the cafeteria and throughout the two campuses. There will be NASD staff at each location to direct you as to exact room assignments for each activity.

Please bring your entire family out as the Natchez-Adams School District joins in the fight to combat obesity, increase physical activity, and educates families of healthy food and snack choices that won’t break the bank.

Marla Farmer, MSN, is the Natchez-Adams School District school nurse coordinator.
