NATCHEZ — Youth softball fans in the Miss-Lou will get their fill the next couple of days as the Natchez-Adams County Girls Softball League kicks off its 2011 season with its three-day long jamboree.
The festivities began Thursday evening as all 25 teams were introduced, and the preseason tournaments started for each age group.
“(The jamboree) is great to get everybody warmed up to all the rules and different things we do,” league board member Belinda Brashier said. “It doesn’t all click until we get into a game.”
There are five different age groups in the league this season.
The youngest is a ponytail league, for 3- and 4-year olds, which is in its inaugural season, Brashier said.
“We’re really excited about our newest league,” Brashier said. “We have five 3- and 4-year-old teams.”
“This league is strictly for fun and (for the girls) to learn the basics of softball and get ready for the higher age groups.”
There is also a tee ball league, coach pitch league and two live pitching leagues that are separated into a 9- and 10-year-old league and an 11-year old and older league.
“We have a really good program (here), and a really good group of kids,” Brashier said.
Each team will play at least two games over the next two days in the jamboree, Brashier said.
On Saturday the action starts at 9 a.m. and the league will feature a fish fry fundraiser to go along with a full day of softball games, Brashier said. There were also be jamboree t-shirts for sale, as well.
They money raised will go toward improvements for the league, such as nets to prevent dangerous foul balls, Brashier said.
The regular season starts 6 p.m. Monday, May 2.
Each team will play approximately 12 games, Brashier said. There are five teams in each league, except for the tee ball league, which has six teams, and the coach pitch league, which has four.
Brashier said the jamboree is like a big opening for the parents, coaches and players and she is excited about the season.
