NANIH WAIYA — Cathedral went into Saturday’s game two with Nanih Waiya down 1-0 in the series and having to win to keep its season alive. The Green Wave turned a must-win contest into batting practice and edged the Warriors 17-15 to force a deciding game three Monday.

“We never felt like we had enough runs,” Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said. “We were up 17-10 going into the bottom of the sixth and they brought it back to 17-15.”

At that point Caleb Upton came in and shut down the Warriors in the seventh.

Beesley said the wind was blowing out, and balls hit to the gaps carried further that both teams’ outfielders expected them to.

Beesley said he was impressed the way his team went on the road and keep the series alive.

“We knew we had our backs against the wall, after losing game one at home. You don’t want to have to go on the road to stay in a series,” Beesley said. “I’m just glad to see our kids keep battling and not giving in.”

The game was back and forth throughout.

Cathedral took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first but Nanih Waiya answered with three runs in the first and five in the second to take an 8-4 lead.

The Green Wave cut the deficit to one in the top of the fourth, only to have Nanih Waiya extend it back to two again in the bottom of the inning.

Then Cathedral did real damage against Nanih Waiya pitcher Luke Rosemand. The Green Wave scored five runs in the fifth and sixth innings to grab the lead for good.

Cathedral had several players put up big numbers at the plate. Kyle Bradley, Blake Martin and Austin Chauvin all had three hits. Martin also doubled and tripled.

Daniel Huffines, Caleb Upton and Collin Hammons each added two hits of their own to the Green Wave tally. Hammons homered and Huffines had two doubles. Cathedral had 16 hits overall.

Blake Martin ended up getting the win for Cathedral.

“Martin did a great job on the mound, he kept us in the game in the second inning,” Beesley said.

The win improves Cathedral to 17-6 on the season and forces a winner-take-all game three at Chester Willis Field at 5 p.m. Monday.
