No all-stars for champs

NATCHEZ — Two area teams had the talent and teamwork to drive themselves to state titles in baseball this season.
Trinity Episcopal and Centreville Academy both put together unprecedented runs to win state championships for the first time in each school’s history.
Generally, when teams put together championship runs at the level the Tigers and Saints did, they produce several standout players that are invited to play in all-star games.
These two teams are exceptions this season, but not because they lacked talented players worthy of all-star status.
Neither Trinity nor Centreville have players participating in the MAIS Classes A and AA/AAA All-Star games this season.
The Saints had several players eligible to compete in the game and several that would have likely been nominated, but a senior trip scheduled in January caused a scheduling conflict for them, athletic director David King said.
The Trinity seniors made a large financial commitment to a senior trip to Cozumel, Mexico, in January and would be unable to get their money refunded should they have chosen to cancel, King said.
The trip and the all-star game fall within one day of each other, so the players were unable to accept invites to attend the all-star game, King said.
Centreville Academy will not be sending any players to the All-Star game due to a technicality. The Tigers only have one senior on their roster, and the All-Star games are for seniors only.
The Tigers lone senior, J.T. Doughty, was used primarily as a pinch running specialist this season, head coach Jason Horne said.
Centreville will return nine juniors to next year’s squad that will have an opportunity to play in the game next season.
“The future is very bright for us,” Horne said.
