Dixon back to normal after heart attack

VIDALIA — The last thing Torrey Dixon remembers about April 9 was making a U-turn.
The rest of the day can only be filled in from reports by people who saw him when he had a heart attack at Baton Rouge Community College while working out for LSU scouts.
The former Vidalia High School basketball star is home for the summer taking classes at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez. As Dixon tries to remember the events of that day, he can only recall up to a certain point.
“I was heading home to be with my family, and on the way home, I was called back to BRCC (to work out). I made a U-turn,” Dixon said.
“I really don’t remember anything. I’ve heard so many stories about what happened that I really don’t know what to believe.”
During the workout, Dixon shot a 3-pointer and backpeddled, then fell to the ground because of the heart attack. He was rushed to Baton Rouge General Medical Center, where he was kept under sedation for a day.
“I woke up the following night (after it happened), and they told me I woke up earlier that I was expected to,” Dixon said. “I got up like nothing had ever happened. I was ready to go play ball again.”
It was probably a good thing Dixon’s coach had called him back to the school, since the heart attack happened in front of people instead of while he was driving.
“I was just happy I wasn’t in my room at the time,” Dixon said. “It probably would have taken at least an hour before someone came back into my room. I might not have made it.”
And since he did make it, Dixon said he doesn’t hesitate to let God know he appreciates being looked out for.
“Every night I get a chance, I thank God for giving me the touch to bring me back,” Dixon said.
Dixon stayed in the hospital approximately a week, he said, and hasn’t had any problems since then. But no one has been able to determine exactly why he had a heart attack, Dixon said.
“They didn’t know what happened and still don’t know,” Dixon said. “I’m not too concerned about it, the only thing that scares me is not knowing why.”
Dixon said he’s spending time with family and friends, and is making sure to stay in shape. After his summer classes at Co-Lin are done, Dixon said he’ll return to BRCC in the fall.
“(The experience) made me want to play even more,” he said. “We came close to winning a conference championship last season, so it made me even more hungry.”
Dixon will be a sophomore this fall at BRCC.
