Ben Hillyer | The Natchez Democrat — Brooks Turner waits nervously in the chairs at the Cathedral Blood Drive Wednesday morning.

NATCHEZ — Brooks Turner had given blood before — in fact, she has donated blood many times. The Copiah-Lincoln Community College sophomore said she needs a calming hand and an assuring voice beside her to guide her through the blood donation process. Even though she is fearful of the needle, she knows that her donation will help save lives. Something she hopes others would do for her if she ever needed help.

Ann Burns, top left, has been in this position before. She has stood behind and held the hands of her granddaughter Brooks Turner several times when Turner donates blood. Each time the power of touch has overcome the fear of the needle.

Ben Hillyer | The Natchez Democrat — One more time, Brooks Turner overcomes her fear of the needle to give blood at the Cathedral Blood Drive in the elementary school’s multi-purpose room Wednesday. Ann Burns plants a kiss on her grandaughter’s forehead after the needle has been placed in Turner’s arm.
