Jennings teams end title run

D’IBERVILLE — For the second straight day, the state tournament series involving the Natchez T.M. Jennings 9-10 and 11-12 All-Star teams had issues with the weather.
Heavy rain for a good part of Saturday morning forced Game 2 of the 9-10 series between Natchez and Biloxi and Game 2 of the 11-12 series between Natchez and Ocean Springs to be delayed from their scheduled 10 a.m. start to 2:30 p.m.
Unfortunately for the Natchez T.M. Jennings 11-12-year-old All-Stars, they could not cool down the offense of Ocean Springs, which hit several home runs for the second-straight game en route to a 10-0 win in four innings to win the state title two games to none.
The momentum was quickly on the side of Ocean Springs after it jumped out to a 5-0 lead after just one inning of play, and Natchez was never able to recover from that onslaught.
“Their hitting is what beat us again. They hit four or five home runs. We didn’t have any offense,” Natchez 11-12 coach Deselle Davis said. “We didn’t make any errors. The runs they put up the first inning were too much to overcome.”
Bailey Keeton picked up the win for Ocean Springs as he held Natchez to just five hits in three innings. Shavoke Herrington was tagged with the loss after giving up nine runs on 11 hits in just two innings.
Despite the lopsided loss, Davis said he was proud of his team for not giving up and for getting this far in the postseason despite being together as a team for just two weeks.
“I liked the attitude of the kids. They played well overall the whole tournament. Overall, I’m proud of them. For them to make it all the way to the state championship (series) says a lot about them. I know it was a runner-up (finish), but to make it that far says a lot about the kids.”
The Natchez T.M. Jennings 9-10 All-Stars were also defeated in Game 2 of their state tournament as they fell to Biloxi 11-1 in five innings. Biloxi won the best-of-three series 2-0 to claim the state championship.
Natchez scored one run in the top of the first inning. After that, Biloxi dominated the game with stellar defense and timely hitting. Biloxi took the lead for good with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first inning and then proceeded to break the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second.
“We couldn’t produce any hits. We consistently hit the ball, but they played great defense,” Natchez 9-10 coach Osmon Perkins said. “They hit the ball, and we didn’t make the defensive plays in all the positions we needed to. Their defense was amazing, and they hit the ball great.”
Schmidt was the winning pitcher for Biloxi while James Singleton took the loss.
The one bright spot for Natchez during the game was the effort of second baseman Jacquan Johnson. Perkins said Johnson had a “stellar defensive performance,” and made several great plays. Also, Devonta Stancel went 2-for-3 with a double to lead Natchez at the plate.
“Overall, it was a great experience. We had a very young team,” Perkins said. “For most of these kids it was their first year playing baseball.”
