NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School and Trinity Episcopal decided to follow each other’s scripts Friday night: score a lot of points.

And both teams won big at the Cathedral football jamboree, with the Green Wave beating West Lincoln 42-14 and the Saints stifling St. Aloysius 44-7.

Both games lasted just two quarters long, but it was plenty of time to get an early idea of the scoring capabilities of both Cathedral and Trinity.

The Green Wave jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Khalil Brice had two touchdown receptions for 25 and 16 yards apiece, and Carl Hammitte added another touchdown on a 50-yard reception.

In the second quarter, Ishmael Blackmon scored in pairs, reaching the end zone on two passes from backup quarterback Thomas Garrity. Blackmon’s touchdowns were for 23 and 16 yards, and Garrity ran in another touchdown from 13 yards out.

Quarterback Caleb Upton finished 9-for-15 with 206 yards passing, and Garrity was 2-fo-4 with 39 yards.”

“The first quarter I was really pleased with, we came out and were up-tempo, and that’s what we want to do all year,” Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing said.

“We played a bunch of people tonight. Caleb was a little too pumped up early in the game (when he struggled early), but a lot of that’s out fault, because we’ve been doing most of the passing work on the practice field and not on the field.”

The Green Wave offense tallied 245 yards passing but just 37 yards on the ground. In addition to his two touchdowns, Blackmon also had three interceptions on the night.

West Lincoln scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 1 and 3 yards.

The Green Wave will open their season at Adams County Christian School next Friday.

Trinity Episcopal

A 35-yard first quarter propelled the Saints to a big preseason victory against St. Al. Vanderbilt commit Tip McKenzie got things started for the Saints, scoring on a 10-yard run and an 82-yard punt return.

Tanner Cage followed up for Trinity with a 66-yard pass from quarterback Scott Turner, and Caleb Gillespie added a touchdown on a 28-yard run. Later in the quarter, Daniel Dunaway had a 61-yard run that set up a scoring drive for the Saints, and Dunaway finished the job several plays later on a 1-yard carry into the end zone.

In the second quarter, Jake Winston hit a 41-yard field goal, and Caleb Cross scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run. St. Al’s only touchdown on the night came on a 41-yard reception by Elliot Bexley from quarterback Carlisle Koestler.

The game was called with a little more than two minutes left in regulation when St. Al was about to draw a personal foul penalty.

“We have some very good athletes, and we put them in spots to make good plays,” Trinity head coach David King said about his team’s big-play capabilities.

“They were physical tonight, which is what I wanted to see.”

Trinity opens its season at Jefferson County High School next Friday.
