Use common sense to collect taxes

The Adams County Board of Supervisors played a long waiting game and upped its financial offer to woo Joe Murray back to the table.
Now that they’ve got him, they’d be wise to listen and implement his ideas.
The county administrator shared a solid plan Wednesday to increase county revenues.
Instead of just sitting back and assuming that local residents — all good, honest Americans, right? — will do the right thing and pay their taxes, the board needs to get proactive.
Murray, who has a background working with the Mississippi Tax Commission, suggested that, instead of simply sending bills and late notices to those with unpaid taxes, the county sends someone door-to-door to do the collecting.
Anyone who ever loaned money to Cousin Ned knows that it may take a personal visit to recoup the funds.
County taxes are no different.
The uncollected tax dollars could easily pay the salary of the doorknocker, and county officials might suddenly feel like money does grow on trees.
We hope Murray’s idea is one the board and Tax Collector Peter Burns can implement now, not later.
The good, honest Americans who do pay their taxes simply deserve it.
