NATCHEZ — Tight end Tyler Flemming enjoyed the off week his team had.

After Cathedral High School got a big win against Adams County Christian School Aug. 19, the Green Wave had a bye week last week.

And the team took advantage of the week off, Fleming said.

“It’s good for recovering,” Flemming said. “We’re able to think up a good scheme for our opponent and rest our bodies. We’ve been going hard since the last day of school last year.”

Fleming also said his team is sort of feeding off the momentum after defeating ACCS.

“We’ve definitely got a lot of confidence, because there was a lot of hype surrounding that game,” Flemming said. “Still, we just take the season one game at a time, looking to perform the same way, if not better.”

Against ACCS, Flemming had one touchdown catch in the second half from backup quarterback Thomas Garrity. With several other teammates getting touchdown passes from starting quarterback Caleb Upton, Flemming said he’s glad to be part of an offense with so many weapons.

“It’s definitely the best offense I’ve been on since I started playing,” Flemming said. “Caleb is the best quarterback I’ve played with. He can spread it around, and it’s great having (other) receivers that can catch the ball and do what I do, or better.”

Although Flemming said he was glad to have an off week, Cathedral head coach Ron Rushing didn’t share his enthusiasm.

“I hate off weeks,” Rushing said. “We ran a lot. It seems like we’ve been doing football the entire year since (last season) was over with. We shortened practices and worked on conditioning.”

Now the Green Wave will turn their attention to Loyd Star, which is coming off a 54-14 loss at the hands of Franklin County High School.

“They’re a very tough team,” Rushing said. “They play until the final whistle blows. It’s the same situation as last year: Franklin County beat them badly, and I knew they were better than the score indicated. They came out and played us tough.”

Rushing said Loyd Star is strictly a downhill running team on offense, and he pointed out that running back Marquis Sims had 119 rushing yards on Franklin County’s defense.

“I actually think their running game is a little better this year than it was last year,” he said. “They’re not really flashy, they just line it up and run straight at you.”

The focal point of practice has been working on the players knowing their correct assignments and getting them to give 100 percent, even away from the play.

“We’re working on blocking, as far as the run (is concerned),” Rushing said. “We haven’t added anything, we’re just trying to get sharper.

“We looked sharp against ACCS, but we weren’t as sharp away from the ball, where we kind of just watched the play. We want all 11 guys doing something.”

Rushing also said he’s worried about his team coming off a bye week early in the season when Loyd Star has played two straight games.

“It’s one thing to run and run, but we’re a long way from being in game shape,” Rushing said.

Kickoff at Cathedral is at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
