NATCHEZ — There was an all-out air attack at D’Evereux Stadium Friday night as Cathedral put up 56 points on seven touchdown passes en route to a 56-7 win over Loyd Star.

Quarterback Caleb Upton connected on 15 of 26 passes for 342 yards and six touchdowns.

“(Upton) did another good job,” Cathedral coach Ron Rushing said. “He sat back, and the offensive line did a great job with giving him time. They played us man, so we ran crosses and Caleb did a good job getting the ball to (our play makers).”

Rushing said his team won with a great all-around performance.

“We played one of the best games we’ve played since I’ve been at Cathedral,” he said. “I think it really gives us a lot of confidence, because Loyd Star is not a bad team. They run the ball extremely well, and our defense played physical and stopped the run. I think I’m more tickled about that than anything.”

Cathedral put up 544 yards of total offense and six different Green Wave players found the end zone.

Khalil Brice and Carl Hammitte were Upton’s two main targets on the night. Brice caught four passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Hammitte caught five for 136 yards and a score. Daniel Huffines, Tyler Flemming, J.D. Ealey and Will Sandel also caught touchdown passes. Ealey also had a good night running the ball. He carried the ball four times for 148 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown run.

“We got to start mixing in more runs for (Ealey), because when he touches the ball he’s got ability to make plays,” Rushing said.

Rushing said his team still has improvements to make, but he is very happy with his defense so far.

“We can still get better,” he said. “We want to be perfect, and get as good as we can. We really showed tonight defensively how good we can be; defensively, this is a totally different team. They showed they can be physical with running teams.”

The win improved the Green Wave to 2-0 on the season. They will travel to Pascagoula to face Resurrection next week.
