MONROE, La. — It was No. 1 versus No. 2 Friday night as Trinity Episcopal took on River Oaks School in a battle of two legitimate contenders for the MAIS Class AA state championship.
This game was also a rematch of last year’s showdown in Natchez won by the Saints 42-21 during their march to an undefeated season and the Class A state title. The Mustangs went on to win the Class AA state title.
Unfortunately, what was supposed to have been a down-to-the-wire game never materialized after Trinity Episcopal scored 21 points in the first quarter as the Saints rolled to a 35-7 win over River Oaks.
Scott Turner hooked up with Tip McKenzie on a 70-yard touchdown pass with 9:32 to go in the opening quarter. Tanner Cage gave Trinity a 13-0 lead with his 55-yard touchdown run. McKenzie scored late in the quarter on a 49-yard run and threw a two-point conversion pass to Turner.
McKenzie went to the air again as he threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Jake Winston with 8:38 remaining in the third quarter. Cage scored his second touchdown of the night on a 26-yard run with 4:46 left in the third quarter to give the Saints a 35-0 lead.
The shutout bid came to an end with 7:15 to go in the ball game when Alex Biedenharn scored on a 16-yard run.
Even though the Saints’ defense gave up 245 rushing yards, their potent and balanced offense more than made up for that. Trinity had 15 first downs, 189 total rushing yards and 263 passing yards.
Turner completed 11 of 15 passes for 229 yards and one touchdown to go with nine carries for 49 yards. Winston had four catches for 77 yards and one touchdown.
McKenzie had an all-around outstanding game — two carries for 44 yards and one touchdown, one completion on his only attempt for 34 yards and one touchdown, and three catches for 125 yards and one touchdown.
Trinity Episcopal (4-1) begins MAIS District 5-AA play at cross-county rival Adams County Christian School next Friday at 7 p.m.
Centreville 35, Oak Forest 0
AMITE, La. — Centerville Academy assistant coach Brian Stutzman said the Tigers played their most complete game of the season Friday night on both sides of the ball. Centreville had 348 yards of total offense and no turnovers while it defense held Oak Forest Academy to just six first downs and 82 yards of total offense as the Tigers shut out the Yellow Jackets in the MAIS District 6-AA opener for both teams.
“The kids came to play tonight. We had a great week of practice and it showed,” Stutzman said.
Colton Terrell scored the Tigers’ first two touchdowns of the game on a 31-yard run early in the first quarter and a 2-yard run early in the second quarter. He added a two-point conversion run after his second touchdown to give Centreville (3-2, 1-0) a 14-0 lead.
Randy Bell scored on an 18-yard run and Gage Chandler’s extra point expanded the Tigers’ lead to 21-0 with 7:21 to go until halftime.
Cliff Hurst scored on a 1-yard run with 8:44 remaining in the third quarter and Tyler Towles scored from 1 yard out with 0:01 left in the quarter for a commanding 35-0 lead. Terrell finished with 93 yards on nine carries while Towles racked up 71 yards on eight carries and Bell had 56 yards on five carries. Hurst went 4-of-6 passing for 89 yards and Colby Shaw had two receptions for 59 yards. The Tigers recovered two fumbles and forced Oak Forest (1-4, 0-1) to punt the ball five times. Centreville hosts Brookhaven Academy at 7 p.m. next Friday.
WCCA 3, Riverfield 0 (OT)
RAYVILLE, La. — Taylor Prevost nailed a 17-yard field goal as Wilkinson County Christian Academy stunned Riverfield Academy in an MAIS South Central A (District 3-A) game Friday.
Riverfield had a chance to score first in overtime, but the Raiders’ kick missed a 19-yard field goal wide left on fourth down. When WCCA got the ball, the Rams drove down to the 2-yard line before losing a few yards on 2nd & goal and 3rd and goal. But on 4th and goal, Prevost had no problem getting his field goal to go right down the middle.
