FAYETTE — Wilkinson County sophomore quarterback Devin Voorhies accounted for nearly two-thirds of the team’s total offense and all four touchdowns as the Wildcats defeated Jefferson County 28-14 Friday night.
In an early and critical Region 7-3A game for both teams, Jefferson County got off to a good start in its homecoming game when Rashaad Bradley threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Dalvin Johnson nearly midway through the first quarter.
However, the Tigers could not sustain the momentum, and homecoming didn’t turn out as planned. Voorhies had a lot to do with that as he completed 11 of 16 passes for 112 yards, including 10-yard touchdown passes to Allenzae Staggers and Kendall Woods. He also led Wilkinson County (4-3, 1-1) in rushing with 126 yards on just 11 carries and two touchdowns. As a team, the Wildcats finished with 376 yards of total offense.
Jefferson County, however, was done in by three costly interceptions. The Tigers didn’t score again until late in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard pass from Rashaad Bradley to Christopher Tyler.
Wilkinson County hosts No. 3 Hazlehurst, while Jefferson County (2-6, 1-1) will play host to Prentiss next Friday. Kickoff for both games is at 7 p.m.
Hazlehurst 28,
Franklin County 12
MEADVILLE — Hazlehurst’s defense kept the Indians in the game in the first half. Once their offense got going in the second half of their Region 7-3A game at Franklin County Friday night, the Bulldogs had no response.
Franklin County was able to move the ball effectively on the third-ranked team in Class 3A throughout the first half. The problem was scoring points once the Bulldogs got deep in Hazlehurst territory.
Five times the Bulldogs had the ball inside the Indians’ 30-yard line. Only once were they able to cross the goal line, and that was on Jimmy Barnes’ 3-yard run early in the second quarter that gave them a 6-0 halftime lead.
After halftime, Hazlehurst (6-1, 2-0) took control. D’alex Rockhingham had two touchdown runs to spark the Indians’ second-half comeback while the defense slowed down Franklin County’s running game and recovered three fumbles.
Franklin County (5-3, 1-1) will look to get back on the winning track when its hosts Crystal Springs for homecoming.
Centreville 35, Columbia Academy 12
CENTREVILLE — Colton Terrell ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, and Tyler Towles threw two touchdown passes as the Centreville Academy Tigers rolled past the Columbia Academy Cougars Friday night at homecoming.
Terrell had a 28-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 71-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. Towles had just three passing attempts, but he completed all three of them for 132 yards. That included a 25-yard scoring pass to Gage Chandler late in the first quarter and an 88-yard touchdown pass to Colby Shaw midway through the third quarter.
Centreville (6-2) led 35-0 before head coach Bill Hurst took most of his starters out and put some of the younger players in.
Columbia Academy (2-6) scored on a 2-yard run by Ty Randall late in the third quarter and a 15-yard run by Will Raborne with 2:34 to go in the ball game.
Centreville returns to MAIS District 6-AA action next Friday at 7 p.m. when it plays at Bowling Green in a key district match-up for both teams.
