ACCS has Silliman before finishing district schedule

NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School is past its three-game gauntlet, and the Rebels will now turn their attention to the rest of their district schedule.
After falling to Trinity Episcopal, Centreville Academy and Simpson Academy, ACCS (1-7, 0-1) will travel to Silliman this week before finishing with Columbia Academy and Brookhaven Academy.
“Silliman’s 4-4 right now, and they like to get in the spread (offense) and do a lot of shotgun work,” Rebels head coach Hunter McKeivier said.
“Their quarterback is a very good runner and a good thrower. Here in the last couple of weeks, they’ve been trying to run him a lot more, and that’s been kind of successful for them.”
On defense, McKeivier said Silliman runs a base 4-3 and are very good at it.
“They try to keep it strong on the inside and let their linebackers flow quickly,” he said. “They’re a very good team. They’ve lost to some pretty stout programs.”
ACCS knows all about strong teams from the last three games the Rebels have played, and McKeivier said his players now see how they stack up against the top teams in MAIS Class AA.
“I hope it’s made us stronger mentally,” McKeivier said. “We understand we’ve played against the best, and we’ve seen what we can do against the best — how we’ve screwed up and how the mistakes have cost us against better teams in the state.
“If we actually put a game all the way together — defense, offense and special teams — and don’t have mistakes or turnovers, we can play with anyone. Right now, our youthfulness and inexperience has really caused a lot of mistakes.”
But McKeivier said that’s not an excuse for allowing those mistakes to continue.
“It’s things we’re looking to correct every single week,” McKeivier said.
If the Rebels manage to win out in their last two district games along with Trinity, the Rebels will be the No. 2 seed from their district going into the playoffs.
“There’s even a great chance if we win one and, with some help, we can still be in the playoffs,” McKeivier said.
“Like I told the guys, it’s real simple: We control our own destiny right now. If we take care of business and play like we’re capable of playing instead of playing below our expectations, we’re going to be fine.”
Kickoff at Silliman is at 7 p.m. Friday.
