NATCHEZ — A late fill-in after a team dropped out in the ACCS Tip-Off Tournament, Monterey High School was on the wrong end of a 51-15 blowout Monday night.

The Lady Wolves were simply unable to get anything going offensively against opponent Brookhaven Academy, and Monterey had no answer for the Lady Cougars’ Terah Winborne and Laura Beth Wright.

Winborne led the game in scoring with 26 points, while Wright tallied 17 points. By contrast, Jessica McNeil led Monterey in scoring with six points.

“We’ve got to make more shots, but I thought we played hard,” Monterey head coach Cary Shively said. “This is (a good) chance to play against a quality opponent and find out a little bit about where you are.”

Monterey trailed early 9-2 through the first several minutes of the game, and Brookhaven began pulling away with approximately three minutes to go in the quarter. The Lady Cougars scored nine unanswered points to take an 18-2 lead after one.

Monterey finally scored again in the second quarter when Kaley Baker hit a layup with 5:25 left in the second. McNeil added two with 4:17 to go before the half, and Taylor Smith hit two free throws with 1:45 left, making the score 28-8 at the half.

McNeil’s two-pointer with 5:37 to go in the third were Monterey’s only points in the period as Brookhaven Academy extended its lead 46-10 after three.

Karlee Woodruff had a free throw and a two-pointer, and McNeil added a field goal to round out Monterey’s scoring in the fourth.

Despite the early season loss, Shively remained optimistic on his team’s outlook for the rest of the year.

“We’re going to be OK,” he said. “We’re going to get there.”
