New county board has work ahead

In two months, county residents will see the results of their most recent Election Day action go into full effect.

Adams County voters ousted two incumbent supervisors and elected a political newcomer to a third post, vacated by a long-time supervisor’s retirement.

The result will be a vastly different board when the first meeting in January rolls around.

Three rookie supervisors will be a dominating force on the new board. Their success will hinge on their ability to lead and make decisions on what is best for all citizens, not just those in their districts and not just those who supported them.

Clearly, voters in the county wanted change. That means a change in the way county government operates and the way county leaders behave.

The county needs to focus on transparency, helping residents understand more about the way county government works — or doesn’t work.

Doing that isn’t difficult, but it will require all of the supervisors to work hard to communicate to the community as much as is possible and to clearly speak what’s on their minds.

For far too long, board meetings have been used for political posturing. Our county’s future progress is far too important for that.

Our community must keep moving ahead, and that likely means doing, thinking and working in different ways than in the past.

We have faith that the new board members can do this; it’s up to them to implement the change.
