Miss-Lou loves country, community

What a patriotic week it was. The weekend kicked off with elections in Mississippi as citizens got the chance to exercise their right to vote.
And by week’s end we paid tribute to the men and women who’ve fought so hard to ensure rights such as voting are protected.
We truly love our country, and our community. And here are just a few reasons why.
– Natchez High School students got creative during their school science fair recently making catapults and weight-loss plans all in the name of research. Congratulations to all the winners. You are our future, and we may need your scientific know-how to survive in the years ahead.
– Names of World War I soldiers once omitted from the plaques outside the federal courthouse are now engraved in our memories forever. Local and out-of-town officials worked to make sure the names — many of black soldiers — were included. We are proud to have a complete picture of our history there for all to see.
– Monterey High School has received the College Readiness Award due to an improvement in students’ ACT scores. Congratulations to the school and district.
– Young Scouts participated in a flag retirement ceremony Saturday, learning the proper way to treat an American flag. We are glad these youngsters are being exposed to such respectful ceremonies.
As we begin a new week and look to the holidays, we won’t forget those men and women who made life as we know it today possible.
