GLOSTER — Services for John Lawrence Greene, 85, of Crosby, who died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at Field Memorial Hospital in Centreville, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. Bart Houston officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow at Roseland Cemetery under the direction of Brown Funeral Home in Gloster.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, both at the funeral home.
Mr. Greene was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Clifton, S.C., the son of John Henry Greene and Marie Carter Greene. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service and was also a retired land surveyor with St. Regis Paper Company.
Mr. Greene was a longtime deacon at Crosby Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Easter Plemmons, Betty Powers and Mary Ruth Hamilton.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Melba Johnson Greene; two sons, Lawrence E. Greene of Crosby and John Michael Greene of Hampton, Va.; three daughters, Carol R. Pace of Vicksburg, Melba B. Shell of Crosby and Karen Green Hollowell of Gloster; seven grandchildren, Carol Bunch of Natchez, Nathan Shell of Crosby, Elijah Hollowell and Michael Hollowell, both of Gloster, Adysen, Aaron and Aiden Greene, all of Hampton; seven sisters, Mary Long, Bobbie Mclean and Ellen Pike, all of Ashville, N.C., Johnie Parker of Leicester, N.C., Margaret Lloyd of Weirsdale, Fla., Ann Garrett and Martha Cooper, both of Fairfax, Va.; and two brothers, Charles Greene of Ashville and Robert Greene of Barnardsville, N.C.
