Jonesville — The Block High School football team’s run toward the LHSAA-1A state title came to an emphatic halt Friday night when the Bears played host to the Mangham Dragons.
Mangham used a huge game from running back Shaquille Ausberry to cruise to a 42-6 win over the Bears.
“The difference was No. 8 (Ausberry),” Block head coach Bennie Vault said. “We had a hard time tackling him consistently. We tackled him at times, but we just couldn’t tackle him consistently. And we missed a few opportunities at the beginning of the game.”
One of those opportunities came on Block’s first drive of the contest. The Bears advanced the ball to Mangham’s 1-yard-line, but were unable to come away with points, Vault said.
“That four-and-out changed the tone of the game,” he said.
Vault said he made some questionable play calls on the series that may have prevented his team from scoring.
“I take ownership of that,” he said.
Vault said he was pleased with his team’s efforts, but they just ran into the wrong team Friday night.
“Overall the kids played hard, we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.
The loss was the Bears first to a Class-1A opponent this season, and Vault said he was impressed with the way his team fought through tough losses early in the season to teams from higher classifications.
“I am very proud,” he said. “We had a little three-game losing streak where the kids kept believing in me, and I kept believing in them that we would have the opportunity at the end of the season to make a run at a championship. I’m very proud of them and very proud of my seniors. We will be back next year.”
Block ends its season with a record of 8-5.
