FAYETTE — Services for Vernon E. Bogan, 72, of Fayette, who died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, at River Region Medical Center in Vicksburg, will be at noon Friday at Hollywood Baptist Church with the Rev. Percy Turner officiating.

Burial will follow at Taylor’s Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery in Fayette under the direction of Spencer Funeral Home in Fayette.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mr. Bogan was born Dec. 6, 1939, in Jackson, the son of James and Geneva Bogan. He was a graduate of New Hope Vocational School in Florence, a graduate of Alcorn College and received a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Jackson State University. He furthered his career by receiving his specialist from Mississippi College.

Mr. Bogan was employed by the Jefferson County school system for 42 years where he was a history teacher, high school counselor and later vocational guidance counselor. He also served as interim director. He was retired.

Mr. Bogan was a faithful deacon and member of Taylor’s Chapel Baptist Church for more than 30 years. He founded the senior citizen program at the church which is currently in its 24th year. He was very independent and loved to be around people.

Mr. Bogan was a member of Jefferson Lodge 202 and served as worshipful master. He received his 32nd Consistory degree in the Masonic Lodge. He also served as the Jefferson County Mental Health Commissioner for 32 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Genese Bogan; one granddaughter, Ashleigh Dukes; and one brother, Wendell Bogan.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mildred Diggs Bogan; three daughters, Sarita Dukes and husband, Andre, Deirdre Ellis and husband, James, and Danielle Bogan, all of Jackson; two granddaughters, Jazmyn Ellis and Allison Dukes, both of Jackson; one grandson, Ashton Dukes of Jackson; one sister, Clara Mae Simon and husband, Afric, of Florence; two godsons, Kelvin King and Frank George, both of Fayette; one uncle, Frank Bogan; one aunt, Edna Mae, both of Chicago; and a number of nieces, nephews, and a number of people that genuinely looked to him as their father.

Pallbearers will be Masonic Lodge 202.

Honorary pallbearers will be Taylor’s Chapel Baptist Church deacons.
