Trinity takes two in Brookhaven

BROOKHAVEN — The Trinity Episcopal Saints ended up playing two games Tuesday at the Brookhaven Academy. And in both games, they came away winners.
In the first game, which was played in the morning, Trinity Episcopal held on to defeat the Riverdale Academy Rebels 47-44. Trae McKenzie and Tanner Cage scored 12 points each while Sky Logan had 11 points. The Saints saw a seven-point halftime lead go away at the end of the third quarter, but they outscored Riverdale 12-8 in the fourth quarter for the come-from-behind win.
In the second game, which took place in the early evening hours, Trinity narrowly defeated a Porter’s Chapel team that was without three of its starters 50-43. Cage led the Saints in scoring with 12 points while McKenzie had a double-double as he had 10 points and pulled down 22 rebounds. Garrett Vinson also had 10 points for the Saints.
Trinity Episcopal (10-1) will take on Parklane Academy today at 5:15 p.m.
St. Thomas Aquinas boys 58, Natchez High 44
LAFAYETTE, La. — Dearius Griffin scored 17 points to lead Natchez High, but it wasn’t enough as the St. Thomas Aquinas (La.) Falcons pulled away in the second half to defeat the Bulldogs Tuesday night at the 2011 Sunkist Shootout at St. Thomas More Catholic High School.
St. Thomas Aquinas rallied in the second quarter to take a 24-23 halftime lead and then went on score 15 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. On the other hand, the Bulldogs just did not have enough offensive firepower to stay with the Falcons. Modestas Bakauskas led St. Thomas Aquinas with 12 points while D.J. Cannon added nine points and Steven Wronkoski chipped in with eight points.
Natchez High (7-7) will take on Comeaux (La.) today at 11:30 a.m.
Centreville Academy boys 52,
Amite School Center 47
WOODVILLE — Kale McKey ended up with 17 points to lead all scorers and Michael Keith added 14 points as the Centreville Academy Tigers did just enough to defeat the Amite School Center Rebels Tuesday afternoon at the WCCA Tournament.
Centreville and Amite School Center went into halftime with the score tied at 20-20. And even though the second half was as competitive as the first half, the Tigers wound up outscoring the Rebels 15-13 in the third quarter and 17-14 in the fourth quarter.
Chance Humphreys chipped in with eight points for Centreville (5-6). The Tigers take on Cathedral Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Amite School Center was led by Trevor Coleman with 14 points.
Cathedral boys 71, WCCA 41
WOODVILLE — Caleb Upton had a triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as Cathedral routed Wilkinson County Christian Academy Tuesday night at the WCCA Tournament.
Jamon Gray led Cathedral (7-6) with a game-high 16 points and D.J. Perry added 12 points as part of the Green Wave’s balanced scoring attack. Cathedral quickly turned a close game at the end of the first quarter into a blowout over the course of the next two quarters. The Green Wave scored 22 points in the second quarter and 27 in the third quarter while the Rams managed just nine and 10 points, respectively.
WCCA (6-3) was led by Dre’ Tolliver with 13 point and Ethan Carruth with 11 points. The Rams take on Amite School Center Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while the Green Wae takes on Centreville Academy Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Tri-County Academy boys 73, ACCS 28
MENDENHALL — Derek Martin, Brady Walker and Lane Williams led Tri-County Academy with 10 points each as the Rebels from Flora handily defeated the ACCS Rebels Tuesday afternoon at the Simpson Academy Tournament.
Tri-County had its way with ACCS for much of this one-sided ball game. By the time the first quarter was over, Tri-County had a commanding 31-10 lead over the Rebels from Natchez and when halftime arrived TCA led 49-14.
Brandon Walker was the one bright spot for ACCS as he finished with a game-high 13 points. ACCS (1-12) will go up against Leake Academy today at 2:30 p.m.
