Prep roundups: Upton, Cathedral top Centreville 52-42

CENTREVILLE — Caleb Upton led Cathedral with a game-high 15 points and Jamon Gray added 10 points as the Green Wave rolled to a 52-42 win over the Centreville Academy Tigers Saturday afternoon.

Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said his team’s defense in the early goings of the game was they key to the Green Wave’s victory.

“We got off to a really good start. We played really good defense in the first half. We pretty much had the game in hand at halftime,” Arnold said.

The Green Wave dominated the Tigers in the first quarter on their way to a 17-5 lead. By halftime Cathedral was ahead of Centreville 30-15 and didn’t allow the Tigers to get back in the game in the second half.

“We got up by 20 in the third quarter, and they cut it at the very end,” Arnold said.

Centreville did manage to outscore Cathedral 16-11 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late for the Tigers, who were led by Corey Gaulden with 12 points and Chance Humphries with nine points.

Cathedral (11-7) returns to MHSAA Region 7-1A action Tuesday night at West Lincoln. Centreville Academy (5-11) plays host to Central Private School in a key MAIS District 6-AA game Tuesday night.

Madison-Ridgeland Academy boys 63,

Trinity Episcopal 46

JACKSON — Madison-Ridgeland Academy got off to a slow start against Trinity Episcopal, but once they their offense got going, there was little the Saints could do to stop it.

Connor Ruwe led MRA with a game-high 28 points and Clinton Moses chipped in with 14 points as the MAIS Class AAA Patriots rolled to a 17-point win over the Saints Saturday night at the Jackson Academy Tournament.

Trinity Episcopal led MRA 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, only to see the Patriots outscore the Saints 14-8 in both the second and third quarters for a 34-23 lead. The fourth quarter turned into an offensive showcase as MRA put up 29 points while Trinity scored 23 points.

Trinity Episcopal was led by Tanner Cage with 15 points and Trae McKenzie with 10 points. The Saints, who fell to 13-5 overall, went 1-2 in the tournament. They will host MAIS District 5-AA opponent and river-city rival Adams County Christian School for a six-game set beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Centreville Academy girls 51, Cathedral 25

CENTREVILLE — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave could not get into any kind of a flow on offense in the first half and Centreville Academy made them pay for it during a 26-point win Saturday afternoon.

Even though both teams were in a rut in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers led the Lady Green Wave 6-2. It was the second quarter that Centreville put the game away as it scored 22 points to just five for Cathedral as the Lady Tigers went into halftime with a commanding 28-7 advantage.

And while the second half was more competitive, Centreville managed to outscore Cathedral 15-12 in the third quarter and 8-6 in the fourth quarter.

Centreville (12-7) was led by Katie Berry with a game-high 17 points while Renee Miley and Harley McKey added nine points each. Cathedral (2-14) had just three players reach the scoring column. Ginny Daggett led the Lady Green Wave with 16 points.

Cathedral plays at West Lincoln in Region 7-1A action Tuesday night while Centreville Academy hosts Central Private School Tuesday night in an District 6-AA game.
