Woman drives vehicle into Vidalia canal

ROD GUAJARDO | THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT — Vidalia Police and Fire Departments use a rope and ladder to pull the driver of a Nissan Sentra out of the Vidalia Canal Tuesday night. The driver crossed oncoming traffic on Carter Street straight into the canal. Authorities on the scene said the erratic driving may have been caused by a seizure.

VIDALIA — The female driver of a Nissan Sentra crossed oncoming traffic on Carter Street straight into the Vidalia Canal Tuesday night.

Authorities on the scene said the erratic driving may have been caused by a seizure.

Vidalia Police and Fire Departments responded to the accident at approximately 7:30 p.m. and found the driver unresponsive.

Shortly after, the driver regained consciousness and claimed she had no injuries, but did not know where she was or how she got there, said Captain Denny Bozeman.

Bozeman said her confusion is what led paramedics to believe she suffered a seizure while she was driving.

The driver was traveling west toward Ferriday and witnesses said she just ran off the road, Bozeman said.

The vehicle scraped the left slope of the canal, but did not flip, before coming to a stop at the bottom.

Firefighters and paramedics placed the driver on a stretcher inside the car and had to put a ladder on the slope of the canal to get her out.

Responders used the ladder and rope as a dolly system to get the driver out of the canal and into the ambulance.

The driver was taken to Natchez Regional Medical Center.

Curtis Wrecker Service pulled the vehicle from the canal.
