NATCHEZ — Seven cars were broken into at Holiday Apartments Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

According to the police reports, a window of each of the vehicles was broken, and the thieves stole approximately $1,229 in items including cash, tools, debit cards, driver’s licenses, a briefcase, CD player and a GPS system.

The car burglaries are the latest in a recent rash of burglaries at Holiday Apartments.

Ward 2 Alderman James “Ricky” Gray, whose ward the apartments are in, said at the Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday that several of the complex’s residents have recently called him with concerns about crime at the apartments.

Gray said Wednesday he has plans for himself and Natchez Interim Police Chief Danny White to meet with the manager of Holiday Apartments about providing security at the complex.

The manager previously told Gray that security would be provided for residents, Gray said, but Gray also said he is unaware of what, if any, security is in place at the apartments.

Gray said the most immediate action Holiday Apartments residents can take to protect themselves from crime is reporting suspicious activity to police.

“We’re going to have to get to a point in Holiday Apartments and everywhere else in the city where when people see a crime, they are not afraid to report it,” he said.

White said he instructed officers to do extra patrols in Holiday Apartments after the burglaries. He also agreed that citizens reporting crime will help police catch criminals more easily and faster.

White said a person should always take all personal and valuable items out of their car when they arrive at home to deter burglaries.

Anyone with information about the burglaries should call NPD at 601-445-5565 or Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
