NATCHEZ — Garrett Henson might not be a juggler per se, but the way he juggles his extracurricular activities is nothing at which to scoff.

Especially when you consider that the Vidalia High School sophomore has a perfect 4.0 GPA to go along with all the things that keep him busy.

Henson, a post player for the Vidalia High School basketball team, is also involved in the school’s band, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students and Positive Behavior Intervention Students organization. He’s also the president of the student council.

As a member of the band, Henson traveled to Monroe, La., this past weekend to try out for honor band. Having made the cut, he will travel to Louisiana Tech Jan. 19-21 to represent Vidalia and will perform in a concert Jan. 21.

“It keeps me active,” Henson said of his busy schedule. “I don’t have much to do in the summer outside of camps, so I sit around the house. I like to be busy.”

Henson said the activities can be overwhelming at times, but he still manages to maintain a social life.

“The (student organization) meetings kind of balance themselves out,” he said. “I have time to talk to friends during school, and I’ll text them here and there.

“On nights I don’t have a lot of homework, I get to relax. I get a lot of schoolwork and homework done during school hours.”

Henson credited his mother, Misty Henson, for helping him keep track of everything he has to do.

“She’s really taught me very well about priorities,” Henson said. “I’ll lay out my day and week with her and try to plan it. Most of the time, it’s a routine, but it’s easy to adjust to any changes (that come along).”

Henson said a typical day for him is to have his mom drop him off at school, go through the day then have band practice from 4 to 5 p.m. After band practice, Henson has basketball from 5 to 7 p.m., and then he goes home and does homework.

When he buckles down to study, Henson said a lot of it comes easy for him.

“I’ve always been just kind of a natural,” Henson said. “I don’t have to go over much. I’ll scan stuff and ask myself questions. With homework, it just depends on how much I have.”

Henson said he doesn’t stay up too late, unless he’s getting back from a road game with basketball and has a project or something.

Basketball is the only sport Henson plays, and he said he’s liked the sport since he was young.

“Most of my family likes football, but I’ve just always had a love for basketball,” Henson said.

“I started at an early age and have always liked the way the game is played. It’s a game you can practice by yourself. You can work on your shots and layups all alone, unlike football or baseball.”
