FERRIDAY — The Ferriday High School boys’ basketball team struggled to get points on the offensive end Friday night in its home contest against Lakeside High School. And while the Trojans were having trouble getting the ball in the basket, Lakeside’s T.J. Carpenter was scoring almost at will to lead the Warriors to a 60-40 win over Ferriday.

Carpenter scored 35 points for the Warriors, and Ferriday head coach James Davis said his performance was outstanding.

“He is an exceptional player,” Davis said. “He can get to the basket and shoot the jumper. And when we fell behind we couldn’t defend him like we wanted (with a zone) and had to go man to man.”

Davis said his team’s struggles with the ball in its hands were just as big a factor in the loss as Carpenter’s performance, however.

“We couldn’t get started on offense, and we had some turnovers that were crucial,” he said. “We did a decent job on defense, but we have got to score points.”

Lakeside jumped out to a 17-8 lead after the first quarter and extended its lead to 33-17 by halftime. Carpenter had 22 of Lakeside’s first half points to lead the way.

Davis said every time his team would make a run, Lakeside would start forcing turnovers and preventing the Trojans from getting in a rhythm on offense.

Lakeside extended its lead to 20 points by the end of the third quarter and started playing a few reserves in the fourth quarter.

Trey Hall led Ferriday with 10 points. Brandon Scott scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Trojans, and Freddie Gray chipped in with seven points of his own.

The loss dropped Ferriday to 1-3 in LHSAA District 2-2A play. The Trojans will host Jonesboro-Hodge Tuesday.

Lakeside girls 41, Ferriday 37

The Ferriday High School girls’ basketball team controlled play for the first three quarters in its district matchup with Lakeside Friday night, and the Lady Trojans took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter.

But, Lakeside was able to put the clamps on the Ferriday offense holding the Lady Trojans to just five fourth-quarter points. Lakeside was able to net 13 points in the final frame to secure the 41-37 win.

Sha’Keria Kelly led the Lady Trojans with 13 points. Jaz Davis and MeElle Reed both added seven points for Ferriday.

The Lady Trojans dropped to 1-3 in district play and 4-13 overall. They will face Jonesboro-Hodge Tuesday.
