NATCHEZ — Area residents have an opportunity to meet with their state representatives and senators Monday morning.

The Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce will host its first legislative breakfast of the year at the Natchez Eola Hotel. Breakfast — which costs $10 per person at the door — will start at 7:30 a.m. and the formal program will begin at 8 a.m.

The legislative breakfast is an opportunity for the people of Natchez-Adams County to meet face-to-face with their elected representatives, NACCC legislative committee member Stephanie Hutchins said.

Each legislator will be given five minutes to speak on what they believe are important issues facing the state. After that, the legislators will answer written questions submitted by those in attendance.

“Although our (elected) people are very good about being accessible, this way you can come to one event and have most or all of them right there, and they will answer you specific questions — you don’t have to worry about a phone call or anything,” Hutchins said.

“It lets them give us an overview of what they see happening at the state level and what we can expect, how that will affect us.”

The breakfast program will last approximately an hour.

“We try to have a formal conclusion at 9 a.m. for the people who need to leave, but our legislators usually hang around a little extra in case somebody wanted to have a private word with them,” Hutchins said.

The chamber tries to host two legislative breakfasts per session.

“We like to meet once at the beginning of the session and once at the end so we can actually see what happened,” Hutchins said.

Sen. Melanie Sojourner, Sen. Kelvin Butler, Rep. Robert Johnson III and Rep. Sam Mims have confirmed they will be attending the breakfast.

Hutchins said as of Friday Rep. Angela Cockerham was trying to rearrange a scheduling conflict so she would be able to attend.
