NATCHEZ — Three days straight of playing 80-minute soccer games took its toll on the Cathedral High School boys Saturday afternoon against Terry High School.

The Green Wave managed just eight shots on goal and didn’t score any points as the Bulldogs won a 2-0 contest.

Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said that his team didn’t have many expectations heading into Saturday’s game, mostly because the players were worn out by the three-game stretch.

“Playing back-to-back-to-back, that’s crazy, plain and simple,” Hogue said. “All things considered, I was pretty impressed. I don’t know where they found the energy, but the guys that showed up played hard.”

Terry had 22 shots on goal, but the game remained scoreless at halftime before Terry’s Tommy Avant tallied the first goal on a header with approximately 31:30 minutes left to play.

The Bulldogs added their second goal at the 20:24 mark when Darrell Williams scored in a one-on-one matchup between himself and Cathedral keeper Blake Martin. With Terry scoring just two goals on 22 attempts, Hogue said he was impressed with Martin’s performance.

“He hadn’t played goalkeeper for a while because we’ve been working this other guy and using (Martin) in the field,” Hogue said.

“Coming into this game, he was kind of moaning about playing keeper, then he kind of realized he wouldn’t have to run, so I think he kind of embraced it. He played very well. None of the goals they scored on were his fault. They were well-played. He didn’t get burned, they just played better.”

Because of the tired bodies on Cathedral’s sideline, Hogue supplemented the varsity players with junior varsity players, but Hogue said it was nothing out of the ordinary for the younger boys.

“Some of the JV that was out there, we work them into most of the varsity games anyway,” Hogue said. “I think we had four JV guys out there at one time, so I was kind of pleased to see their performance. They played well.”

With the regular season over for Cathedral, the Green Wave will head to Biloxi either Tuesday or Wednesday to take on St. Patrick Catholic High School.
