NATCHEZ — Trinity Episcopal’s Sky Logan and Trae McKenzie proved to be too much for the Adams County Christian School basketball team to handle in the paint Tuesday night.

McKenzie and Logan each put up 16 points, and McKenzie pulled down 16 rebounds while Logan added nine of his own to lead Trinity to a 66-27 win at ACCS.

The win moved the Saints to 3-1 in MAIS District 5-AA, and head coach David King said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We played good enough to win tonight,” King said. “At times we played real well. We are excited about where we are headed. We played a lot of people, and ACCS played hard.”

ACCS (1-18) fell to 0-5 in the district with the loss, and head coach Rick Fife said he thought the Rebels played well early in the game, but Trinity’s depth took advantage quickly.

“Early in the game I thought we stuck to our game plan,” Fife said. “Trinity has exceptional athletes, and we started to get beat on the boards and at that point it kind of snowballed.”

The game was close for much of the first quarter, but the Saints started to pull away in the last couple of minutes of the period and led 22-10 by the time the quarter ended.

Trinity showed multiple press defenses in the game, and ACCS started having trouble breaking the pressure late in the first quarter, which led to some easy baskets for the Saints.

“We wanted to work on a couple of different presses,” King said. “We’ve put some stuff in and worked on a lot.”

Fife said Trinity’s multiple looks caused a few problems for the Rebels.

“We handled the press early and worked the ball around,” he said. “I think our offense stalled. They were switching defenses out on us.”

Trinity stretched its lead in the second and third quarters by holding the Rebels to just six points in each of those periods. The Saints led 51-22 going into the final period.

Despite the dominant performance by the Saints, King said he did see some room for improvement.

“We are not a very good team against the zone,” King said. “We have to shoot the ball better.”

Tanner Cage was the Saints’ third-leading scorer with seven points, while four Trinity players — Jacob Sandrock, Trey Fleming, Tommy McCoy and Garrett Vinson — each scored five points.

Brandon Walker led ACCS with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the contest.

Fife said there are things for his team to learn in a loss like the one to Trinity.

“The biggest thing is that we can play with anybody early,” he said. “We have to cut down on our turnovers and make our free throws and play defense.”

Trinity (15-7) will travel to face Tallulah Academy Thursday. The Rebels will host Centreville Academy Saturday.

ACCS girls 54, Trinity 24

Brandis White’s triple double led the ACCS girls’ basketball team to a convincing, 54-24, win over Trinity Tuesday night.

White scored 21 points, had 14 steals and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Rebels to the district win.

ACCS controlled play for the duration of the contest. The Lady Rebels jumped out to a 12-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 26-10 at halftime. ACCS doubled-up Trinity, 28-14, in the second half to cruise to the 30-point win.

The Lady Rebels’ Tory Laird was the second-leading scorer in the game with nine points, and Jessica Reynolds added seven points for ACCS.

Murphy Aldridge scored five points to lead Trinity. Rosie Woods, Abbey Ashmore and Rachel House each added four points for the Lady Saints.

ACCS improved to 22-4 on the season and 2-3 in the district, while Trinity dropped to 7-13 and 0-4.
