Girls roundups: FCHS goes to 9-0 in region play

MEADVILLE — Toni Robinson led a balanced scoring attack for Franklin County with a game-high 14 points as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Hazlehurst Lady Indians 59-34 in MHSAA Region 7-3A action Tuesday night.

Franklin County (19-4, 9-0) trailed Hazlehurst 14-12 after one quarter of play before taking command of the game with a 16-5 advantage in the second quarter for a 28-19 halftime lead. The Lady Bulldogs then put the game away by outscoring the Lady Indians 15-5 in the third quarter. Jenny Joiner led Hazlehurst with 10 points while Ronecia Durr chipped in with eight points.

Briana Grayson and Jamechia Day scored eight points each while Kierra Sykes and Latorya Griffin added six points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs, who wrapped up the No. 1 seed for next week’s Region 7-3A Tournament. Franklin County next plays at Jefferson County Friday night.

Block 60, LaSalle 30

JONESVILLE — The first quarter of Tuesday night’s LHSAA District 4-1A game between LaSalle and Block was a good one. When the quarter ended, the Lady Tigers had a 17-16 lead.

But in the final three quarters, LaSalle scored a total of 13 points. And Block’s defense had a lot to do with that in what turned out to be a 30-point victory for the Lady Bears. Led by Rosie Jefferson and Ta-Chundra Johnson, Block outscored LaSalle 22-4 in the second quarter for a 38-21 halftime lead and the Lady Bears never looked back.

Jefferson finished with 16 points and Johnson scored 15 points. Quinnesha Branch had 13 points and Tee Harbor added 11 points for Block (7-12, 4-1). The Lady Bears host Montgomery Friday night.

Jena 31, Vidalia 29

VIDALIA — The Vidalia Lady Vikings were one half away from picking up their first win in LHSAA District 3-3A this season until Jena took the lead in the third quarter and held on for the two-point win Tuesday night.

Vidalia led Jena 14-12 at halftime before the Lady Giants outscored the Lady Vikings 8-4 in the third quarter for a 20-18 advantage. In the fourth quarter, Vidalia scored 11 points — and so did Jena.

Kisha Swanson led Vidalia (0-7 in District 3-3A) with a game-high 13 points and Shermel Bell added six points. The Lady Vikings host Buckeye for Vidalia’s Sweetheart Game Friday night.

Jefferson County 64, Wilkinson County 59

WOODVILLE — Neither Jefferson County nor Wilkinson County was able to pull away in the first half of their important MHSAA Region 7-3A match-up Tuesday night. In fact, the game was tied at halftime, 27-27.

But the Lady Tigers did just enough in the second half to overtake the Lady Wildcats and maintain second place in the region standings. Jefferson County outscored Wilkinson County 18-15 in the third quarter and 19-17 in the fourth quarter. Wilkinson County (5-4 in Region 7-3A) was led by Linesia Palmer with a game-high 24 points and Maleasia Slack added 16 points. The Lady Wildcats host Prentiss Friday night.

Keionne January led Jefferson County (13-10, 7-2) with 21 points and Brandy Buck ended up with 14 points. Malikia Graves had a double-double as she scored 14 points and dished out 11 assists. Haley Turner almost had a double-double of her own as she had 12 points to go with eight rebounds. The Lady Tigers host first-place Franklin County Friday night.

Monterey 32, Avoyelles Charter 25

MONTEREY — After allowing 13 points to Avoyelles Charter in the first quarter, Monterey gave up 12 points the rest of the game as the Lady Wolves prevailed in an LHSAA District 4-B game Tuesday night.

Monterey trailed Avoyelles Charter 13-12 at the end of the first quarter and both teams went into halftime with the score tied at 17-17. The Lady Wolves finally took control of the game with a rather low-scoring third quarter in which they outscored the Lady Vikings 6-2. Monterey capped off the win with a 9-6 advantage in the fourth quarter.

Ellen Bairnsfather led the Lady Wolves (19-7, 5-1) with 12 points and Kristen Russell added nine points. Monterey plays host to Rapides Friday night.

Piney Woods 44, Cathedral 37

PINEY WOODS — Raven Thompson led all scorers with 28 points as the Piney Woods Lady Tornadoes overcame an early deficit to defeat the Cathedral Lady Green Wave in an MHSAA Region 7-1A game Tuesday night.

Cathedral had an 8-6 lead over Piney Woods at the end of the first quarter. But the Lady Tornadoes responded by outscoring the Lady Green Wave 18-8 in the second quarter to take 24-16 lead into halftime.

Kiwanda Kelly scored 10 points for Piney Woods, which improved to 4-5 in Region 7-1A. Ginny Daggett led Cathedral (2-21, 0-9) with 19 points. The Lady Green Wave hosts Bogue Chitto Friday night.

Lake Providence 48, Ferriday 24

FERRIDAY — Sha’Keria Kelly scored 19 points to lead Ferriday, but Lake Providence had three players score in double figures in the Lady Panthers’ 24-point win over the Lady Trojans in LHSAA District 2-2A action Tuesday night.

Lake Providence (5-17, 1-6) was led by B. Newton with 18 points while K. Hawkins had 12 points and C. Wingate chipped in with 10 points. The Lady Panthers led the Lady Trojans 18-14 at halftime and then put the game away in the third quarter.

Ferriday (4-15, 1-6) plays host to Homer for Senior Night in the regular-season home finale Friday night.
