NATCHEZ — A preliminary hearing for two suspects charged in connection with the November shooting of a Natchez man has been continued to allow the prosecution more time to collect evidence.
Judge Charlie Vess said he continued the hearing for Lorenzo Green, 20, 76 1/2 Brenham Ave., and Corey Taylor, 23, 9 North Circle, until 3 p.m. on Feb. 14 at the request of County Prosecutor Barrett Martin.
Vess said Martin asked for a continuation to allow the prosecution time to subpoena more witnesses, including the victim, 39-year-old Tyrone Hoggatt Sr., and doctors who treated Hoggatt to confirm whether or not he was shot on the night of the incident.
Adams County Sheriff Chuck Mayfield has said the Nov. 5 incident went unreported to his office. Rumors circulated on the social networking site Facebook and throughout the community that Hoggatt was injured in a fall from a horse, then changed multiple times from Hoggatt being assaulted to stabbed to severely beaten in his house.
Mayfield has said once his office discovered Hoggatt had been shot and was being treated at a hospital in Jackson, Hoggatt remained uncooperative with law enforcement.
Mayfield has said the shooting was most likely drug-related. He said Hoggatt is a known drug violator.
Vess also reduced the $150,000 bond set for both suspects at the hearing to a $75,000 cash or bail bond for Green, who has a prior charge for bond jumping, and $90,000 for Taylor, who also has a drug charge and has been in jail for four months.
