FERRIDAY — A Mass of Christian Burial service for Dr. Eugene W. Vogt Jr., 88, of Ferriday, who died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Heritage Manor after an extended illness, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Comer Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the 7 p.m. wake service on Monday at the church.
Dr. Vogt was born on Jan. 1, 1924, the son of Eugene W. and Ethel Rhorer Vogt.
Dr. Vogt was a 1942 graduate of Ferriday High School. He attended Springhill College in Mobile, Ala., Emory University in Atlanta and Louisiana State University Medical School. He served as an intern at the Louisiana Charity Hospital in Shreveport, La. Dr. Vogt returned to Ferriday in 1948 and practiced medicine with Dr. Ratcliff and Dr. Coleman at the old Ferriday Hospital.
Dr. Vogt was called into active duty in 1951 at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia. He then transferred to the United States Marine Corp. at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C., and finally to the United States Air Force and served at Barksdale Air Force base in Shreveport. Dr. Vogt served in the United States Navy, Marines and Air Force because at that time all branches of the military shared physicians.
On Sept. 20, 1948, Dr. Vogt married his best friend, Marjorie Tinsley, whom he had met at Charity Hospital while she was a student nurse. Mrs. Vogt became his beloved wife and devoted mother to his children.
Dr. Vogt was one of the first physicians to practice at Riverland Medical Center Ferriday in 1965. He retired from practice in 1988 after 40 years as a physician in Ferriday. He was a member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church, where he was a lifetime greeter and served as collection usher.
Dr. Vogt is preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Rhorer Vogt; grandson, Michael Tinsley Vogt; granddaughter, Katherine Ashley Vogt; brother, Frank Vogt, and sister, Kitty Vogt Deprato.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marjorie T. Vogt, of Ferriday; his sons Eugene “Goo” W. Vogt III, and wife, Laura, and their two daughters, Maggie and Melissa Vogt; Michael Tinsley Vogt and his son, James Michael Vogt; Joseph Patrick Vogt Sr., and wife, Merida, and their children Joseph Patrick Vogt Jr., Robert Harrison Vogt, Ainsley Smith and Blake Robinson; Shannon Dennis Vogt and wife, Shannon Lewis-Vogt, and their children Catherine Sullivan and husband, Chris, Christopher Vogt and Gavin Tinsley Vogt; four great-grandchildren and brothers, Howard Vogt and wife, Betty Jane, Barry Vogt.
Pallbearers will be Jay Deprato, Sheriff-Elect Kenneth Hedricks, Joe Sontoyo, John Taylor, Vernon Stevens, Perry Corbett, Jamie Jacobs and Angelo Latino.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Henry Moak, Dr. Maurice Gremillion, Dr. Herman Gibson, Mayor Glen McGlothin, Steven Vogt, Jeff Deprato, Woody Dollar, Wayne Tinsley and Andy Anders.
