Prep boys roundups: Tensas Academy tops C-H

LIBERTY — Blaine Fletcher finished with a game-high 24 points and Rush Capdepon had 14 points as the Tensas Academy Chiefs defeated Chamberlain-Hunt 63-42 in the first round of the MAIS District 6-A Tournament at Amite School Center.
Tensas Academy got off to a strong start and led Chamberlain-Hunt 20-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Chiefs then turned to their defense by holding Chamberlain-Hunt to seven points in both the second and third quarters. When the third quarter was over, the Chiefs had a 39-25 lead.
By the time Chamberlain-Hunt got its shots to fall in the fourth quarter, it was too late. CHA scored 17 points in the final quarter, but Tensas Academy did even better by putting up 24 points. Levi Howse led Chamberlain-Hunt with 17 points.
Next up for Tensas Academy is a semifinal-round game against Tallulah Academy Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
Jefferson County 67,
Prentiss 66 (OT)
FAYETTE — The Prentiss Bulldogs came oh so close to doing what their counterparts on the varsity girls’ side did in the first round of the MHSAA Region 7-3A Tournament — pull off a huge upset in the first round.
Prentiss, the No. 6 seed, had No. 3 seed and host Jefferson County on the ropes after dominating the first half en route to a 34-22 halftime lead. But the Tigers would storm back in the second half to force overtime and then escape with a one-point win by outscoring the Bulldogs 11-10 in the extra session.
RyYale Brown led Jefferson County with a game-high 21 points while Jarmell Anderson scored 17 points and Nicholas Brown added 15 points. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 in the third quarter and 14-11 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime with the score tied at 56-56. Jefferson County takes on No. 2 seed Hazlehurst Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Trinity Episcopal 54,
Oak Forest 34
AMITE, La. — Trae McKenzie led Trinity Episcopal with 14 points and Tanner Cage added 10 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the fifth-ranked team in Class AA took care of the Oak Forest Academy Yellow Jackets Tuesday night.
Defense was a big factor in the win for Trinity as the Saints outscored Oak Forest in all four quarters. The Saints took a 25-15 lead over the Yellow Jackets into halftime. When the fourth quarter got under way, Trinity was ahead of Oak Forest 41-27.
Garrett Vinson ended up with nine points while Carter Smith and Tip McKenzie added six points each for Trinity Episcopal (20-8), which will be the No. 2 seed in the MAIS District 5-AA Tournament at ACCS. The Saints will take on No. 3 seed Columbia Academy Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Lakeside 50, Ferriday 46
SIBLEY, La. — Tyrus Irving led Lakeside with a game-high 23 points as the Warriors rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat the Ferriday Trojans in an LHSAA District 2-2A game Tuesday night.
Ferriday took a 32-28 lead over Lakeside at halftime after the Trojans outscored the Warriors 14-9 in the second quarter. But in the second half, Lakeside’s defense was a completely different story. Ferriday was held to eight points in the third quarter and six in the fourth.
Charles Chandler led Ferriday (9-11, 2-7) with 16 points and Richard Jefferson had eight points. The Trojans play at Jonesboro-Hodge Friday night.
St. Mary’s 77, Block 65
NATCHITOCHES, La. — The St. Mary’s Tigers overcame a 37-point performance from Block’s Dorian Bowman to defeat the Bears in LHSAA District 4-1A action Tuesday night.
St. Mary’s took a 42-35 lead into halftime and then continued to add to its lead in the second half. The Tigers were led by Derion Porchia with 34 points and Blake Cedkell with 18 points. Steele Merritt added 15 points.
The only other player to score in double figures for Block (7-14, 4-3) was Jahmal Macklin, who had 11 points. The Bears play at Northwood-Lena Friday night.
