Franklin County girls take Region 7-3A title

FAYETTE — The Franklin County girls’ basketball team secured the top spot in MHSAA Region 7-3A Friday night with a 75-40 victory over Jefferson County in the region tournament.
Franklin County had four players finish in double-digits to cruise to the 35-point victory.
Kierra Collins led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points. Latoya Griffin scored 15 points. Toni Robinson added 11 points and Briana Grayson finished with 10 points.
Brandy Buck scored 15 points to lead Jefferson County, and Haley Turner added 14 points.
Jefferson County finished in second place in the region and will go into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.
Block 47, Northwood-Lena 17
LENA, La. — The Block High School girls basketball team shut out Northwood High School in the opening period to set the town in their matchup Friday night at Northwood.
The Lady Bears took a 15-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 47-17 victory.
Tanikqua Harbor led the Lady Bears with 11 points. Quinesha Branch scored eight points, Pinesha Branch added seven points and Bontresia Barber chipped in with six points to lead Block.
The Lady Bears dominated the first half of the contest and led 23-3 at halftime before cruising to the 30-point win.
Block ends its regular season at 10-12 and 7-1 in LHSAA District 4-1A. The Lady Bears’ district record qualifies them for the playoffs, and they will await their first-round matchup.
Jonesboro-Hodge 69, Ferriday 32
JONESBORO, La. — The Jonesboro-Hodge girls’ basketball team was too much for the Ferriday High School girls to handle Friday night.
Jonesboro-Hodge controlled play the entire contest and jumped out to a 40-11 lead by halftime. The Lady Tigers continued their dominance in the third quarter and took a 63-18 lead into the final frame.
Trenia Melancon led Ferriday in scoring with 12 points. Shakeria Kelly added nine points for the Lady Trojans.
Ferriday finishes its season at 4-17 overall and 1-9 in LHSAA District 2-2A.
Avoyelles 70, Vidalia 19
MOREAUVILLE, La. — Vidalia finished its season Friday night with a lopsided loss at Avoyelles High School.
The Lady Vikings struggled to keep up with Avoyelles the entire night and lost 70-19.
Avoyelles used a 30-point first quarter to jump ahead 30-3 and led 49-11 by halftime.
Toni Swanson and Fran Duson each scored five points to lead the Lady Vikings.
The loss ends Vidalia’s season. The Lady Vikings finished with a record of 2-20 and 0-10 in LHSAA District 3-3A.
