NATCHEZ — Residents of the Natchez-Adams County area will gather Saturday in an effort to make the community look a little nicer.

The group will be doing a community cleanup day as part of what has become an annual event, Adams County Extension Service Director David Carter said. Carter is also the county supervisor for District 2.

Last year, the group focused on the area of Duncan Park. This year’s project will be in the area of the Liberty Road entrance into town from the Natchez Trace. The effort will focus on weeding, mulching where it is needed and pruning crepe myrtles in the area, Carter said.

“We are trying to fix that whole area down there,” he said.

“If we have a lot of people, we may try to prune (crepe myrtles) in front of (Natchez) High School.”

The cleanup will start at 9 a.m., meeting up behind Liberty Park, and will last until it is finished. Leadership Natchez, the Adams County Master Gardeners and the Cathedral football team have committed to attending, but Carter said anyone who is willing to work to make the community look better is welcome.

“I think when people come to our town, they need to see the pride we take in it, and we have a lot of volunteer groups who are willing to make that happen,” Carter said.

And while he’s happy to work with the volunteer groups, Carter said he would like to see a comprehensive Natchez-Adams County beautification program put into action.

“When I travel, I notice the way towns look,” he said. “You pull into some towns and you can tell they have pride, and you pull into other towns and can tell they don’t care. I think Natchez should be a town that says it cares.”

Money and time spent on city beautification is money spent where everybody benefits, because everyone uses the streets, Carter said.
