Missed free throws cost ACCS game

MENDENHALL — Adams County Christian School girls head coach Melanie Hall has repeatedly warned her team about missed free throws adding up eventually.
And that finally happened Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the MAIS Class AA South State tournament at Simpson Academy, when the Lady Rebels fell to Bowling Green Academy 52-42.
Hall said the difference in foul shooting ultimately gave Bowling Green an advantage.
“We missed 16 free throws, and you can’t do that and come out on top very often,” Hall said.
“Free throws came back and bit us in the behind. They missed one out of 13, so if they make that one, and we make ours, we win by seven. Bottom line, you have to make free throws.”
Brandis White led the Lady Rebels in scoring yet again and finished with 17 points. Tory Laird added 13 points for ACCS, which trailed 29-15 at halftime.
Bowling Green’s Mackayla Dykes tallied 16 points, and Reagan Moody added 10 points. Bowling Green led 36-28 at the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Rebels (28-6) will play in a consolation game at 1 p.m. today, and Hall said she wishes she had the answer for her team’s free-throw shooting woes.
“There’s so many things you can do,” Hall said. “We shoot a lot (in practice), and it’s just repetitive. You also can’t let it get mental when you miss one and say, ‘Oh no, I missed one,’ and let it get to you.
“If I had the answer, we’d give them the pill.”
Central Private 69, Trinity Episcopal boys 54, OT
Although Trinity Episcopal was able to force overtime, two of the Saints’ top players had fouled out against Central Private School in the semifinals of the MAIS Class AA South State tournament.
The game was tied 52-52 at the end of regulation, but without top scorer Tanner Cage and Sky Logan, the Saints were heavily outmanned in overtime. As a result, Central Private outscored the Saints 17-2 in the extra period.
Cage had 15 points for the Saints, while brothers Tip and Trae McKenzie both scored 10 points. Trae also had 10 rebouds and five assists for Trinity.
Central Private led 24-20 at intermission. Lance Wicker and Alex Overs both finished with 19 points for the Rebels. Piers Carroll added 16 points for Central Private.
Trinity (23-10) will play Bowling Green at 6 tonight in the consolation round.

Choctaw Central 65, Franklin County girls 52
FOREST — Two girls scoring 15 points for Franklin County was not enough for the Lady Bulldogs as Choctaw Central eliminated them from the MHSAA Class 3A South State tournament at Forest High School.
Kierra Collins and Kierra Sykes both tallied 15 points for Franklin County, but Choctaw Central led 34-21 at the half and 56-37 at the end of the third.
Franklin County finished its season with a 24-5 record.
