JACKSON — The Centreville Academy Tigers scored six runs to start off the game and as the defending MAIS Class AA state champions took care of the Hillcrest Christian School Cougars 14-2 Monday night.
The game lasted just five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. And winning pitcher Blake Devall was on his game on the mound for Centreville in its season-opener. All he did was pitch a no-hitter through his four innings of work, struck out eight batters and walked just two.
The six runs Centreville (1-0) scored in the top of the first inning were more than enough run support for Devall. But the Tigers weren’t done. They scored one run in the top of the second and then went ahead 14-0 after plating seven runs in the top of the fourth.
Hillcrest had its only hit and scored its only two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cougars were not able to bring in enough runs to extend the game.
Gage Chandler led the Tigers at the plate by going 3-for-3. Hunter Travis went 2-for-3 with a double and Tyler Towles was also 2-for-3. Cliff Hurst and Hunter Devall each had a double.
Centreville Academy hosts Parklane Academy Friday with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.
